Iford Manor!

Last night I signed out of Facebook, just in case anyone who found me there to befriend wonders where I am. I just found myself going back to it and chatting with people, even after I had bought a replacement car.

I do like chatting to people (most of them anyway) and looking at their photos (most of them anyway) but I just don't like Facebook. I don't like the way it draws you in and pretends to be indispensable. All the people who want to talk to me or send me photos know my addresses.

In the main, it was one particular person in my limited group of 'friends' that put me off the whole thing. He puts up about five posts a day, with pictures. He is utterly obsessed and I cannot bear to look at them. I could 'unfriend' him, but that would seem an insult to someone I hardly know. Another reason to dislike Facebook.

I did have a brief chat with Jane Hattatt though, which was nice. I miss the Hattatts here, but even mentioning Iford Manor doesn't bring them back any more.

  1. I find fb annoying, but has its uses.Unlike text and email you can see when a person is online, and if and when they read your message. You can be friends and not see a person's postings by the way.
I enjoy chatting to fellow artists round the world...more seem to be leaving blogging which is a pity. You can't so easily find old posts on fb...

    1. This thing about knowing when someone is online or not is not a very attractive facility to most people. It takes away the opportunity to hide, or pretend that you have not read someone's comments.

  2. I second the comment re you do not have to unfriend to not see their posts. Invaluable when you have a 'friend' who is obviously heading for disaster with their latest beau.

    1. No, but the latest posts is always at the top of a list of others, and there it stays forever.

  3. I use Facebook mostly to keep in touch with family and friends who live at a distance and around the holidays it can be fun. During elections I try not to look at some posts. I keep it simple.

    2. Antiques? Damn. I may have to go back.

  4. I have quit Facebook twice in the last year, but keep sneaking back to make sure I'm not missing anything. Invariably what I encounter annoys me as much as ever. One old friend has been enjoying mild publishing success in journals with names like "Mothers' Musings" and keeps posting links to her self-satisfied online articles. So now I am relying on Instagram to keep up with the cool crowd. And I do like Twitter for current events.

    1. Yes - I feel the same way about Glastonbury. Every year I get a twinge that I am missing out on the party - which, of course, I am. It doesn't mean that I would enjoy myself if I was there though.

  5. See you down the road, when you need the next car.
Currently I find FB invaluable for promulgating actionable thinking.

    1. There speaks a man with about 2500 followers on Blogger! I have 150 'friends' on Face book and I stopped to look at who they were the other day. Surprisingly, I knew almost all of them personally. It has to be said that most were pub friendships.

  7. FB began making me feel upset in a way I don't want or need. I don't miss it, per se, but I do chat less with those who seem to use FB almost exclusively to communicate with the outside world. Sometimes, I miss them.

    1. Most of the people I know on Facebook use it to keep up with the 30 something year-olds who have not got married and have children like they have.

  8. I have noticed a distinct lack of female pouting selfies on facebook over the last year. A massive improvement.

  9. I've never been on FB and think it's too late to go there now.....I'm not a great chatter in real life so perhaps wouldn't find it useful ...... or maybe I'm just a bad tempered billy no mates who hates the world......

    1. I think you have to have Facebook if you have any sort of business, but the rest of it is mainly a waste of time. You would really hate the world if you joined Facebook.
