I know that people have to go back to work and the economy is facing an even rougher time than it has over the last 18 months, but if gov.uk really were listening to the scientists as they pretend to be, why give people a choice as to whether or not they wear a mask on a crowded bus or tube when infections are doubling on a weekly basis?
Recent history has shown that it is not always a good idea to give the public a choice when it comes to matters of national importance, but this gambit has served B.J. very well in the absence of any sort of genuinely authoritative government.
I look back with fond memories to a time when choices were limited. Competition amongst retailers was limited to a handful of rival British companies whose tactics involved making their own product the best on the market. White goods were repairable and the most reliable on offer were renowned for being so. Reviews - where they existed - were often genuine and public tastes and fads were not so easy to manipulate. Coffee came in two categories - black or white.
There are some decisions which really ought to be taken by sensible people who follow the best advice available at the time, but we didn't vote for people like that.
At the beginning of Covid, my state government very strongly advocated safety measures, and later, vaccinations. Except the government if Republican and you remember who was in charge here then. The big T backed down our governor on many issues, and the state health director, who advised the mask mandate, which was adopted, had death threats and eventually resigned. Those Proud Boys have a lot to answer for, and they aren't advocating Self Rights. They are just Juvenile Nitwits run amok in their parent's booze and drug cabinet.
ReplyDeleteMy state government "is" Republican.
DeletePS-this post is eight hours old, according to my computer, and I'm the first commenter? The island must be totally engrossed in sports this weekend.
Extreme right wing Republicans have a very naive idea of what 'freedom' is. The NRA's slogan is 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people'. Military assault weapons are designed to do one thing - kill people. Too late now.
DeleteThe idea that their rights are more important than anyone else's rights is at the root of almost all our problems. No kindness or consideration or sympathy or assistance. As long as THEY have their rights, that's all that counts.
DeleteI understand the need to get back to normal but not at all costs and feel there will be no real normal while those who feel uneasy or vulnerable hide themselves away from the unmasked crowds. As the Johnson variant mostly seems to be spreading amongst the young I'll be avoiding anywhere where they might be breathing all over me. Buses, shops, cinemas, pubs.
ReplyDeleteBack to the click and collect for us.
There will be no old normal.
DeleteI shall continue to wear a mask in the few shops that I visit. I do however wonder why I keep seeing single people driving wearing a mask. (Or walking in more or less empty out of town areas wearing a mask.)
ReplyDeleteI see couples in the street, one wearing a mask and the other not. I think that for some people mask-wearing has become a statement. The Japanese have worn masks in public for decades if they have a slight cold. They are very polite people.
DeleteIt is almost like BJ is pitting one group of people against another. Bad government on his part and history will record it. The basic wear a mask and socially distance will be my choice.
ReplyDelete'pitching' of course....
DeleteI think you were right the first time. That is what popularist governments do - pit one group against the other and try to pick the side most likely to win a bad argument. They rely on the unconditional support of their supporters. Spreading division is an necessary part of the tactics. It is winning by sheer force, not reason.
DeleteSurprise surprise - they now say that they 'expect' people in crowded public places to continue to wear masks. They have high expectations if they think people will adhere to this latest u-turn without being forced to comply by law. I don't think there could have been a more hopeless crew than the lot we have now.

DeleteWhen Covid was raging, masks, social distancing, and vaccines were recommended by the Center of Disease Control (CDC). Various messages came down from there and they were not all perfectly aligned. Ultimately, if you expected to be admitted anywhere, you had to wear a mask (regardless of the messages from above). Currently, some states have reached a high vaccination rate, others have not. At present, the Delta variant is dominating and the younger population seems to be impacted most. Many programs are underway to continue to vaccinate, yet nothing is mandated. I am told, because the vaccines were pushed out on an emergency basis, a mandate is legally impossible.
ReplyDeleteThe whole thing has been a continual conflict between economists and health advisors, sending conflicting and confusing messages since the beginning.
DeleteWhere does this photo hail from? Is this the sight that greeted you at the height of the food hoarding?
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I pulled it off an archived newspaper site.
DeleteCommon sense has flown out the window, and I keep waiting for Darwin to take center stage. I just don't understand how opinion matters more than actual science. My sister, who is a NURSE, believes that the vaccine alters your DNA. I said, "But that's not true..." and she snapped, "That's my opinion..." But it is factually incorrect. It is NOT an opinion, it is a delusion. As a nurse, she is presenting her opinion as if she knows this from a medical standpoint. I fear for our country.
ReplyDeleteIt is not an informed political opinion in our case. It is a popularist ploy to gain votes in the next election. We are governed by a bunch of c***s.
