I'm a naughty Tory

Pretty soon the House of Lords is going to become an expensive waste of time and resources, if it isn't already. Boris Johnson has just watered it down even further by creating 36 new peerages, including one for his own brother. Tony Blair did the same thing as a parting shot. The Lords used to be a very useful institution which curbed the excesses of the Commons, but ever since they scrapped the hereditary nobles, titles are meaningless.

If there is room for one more, John Bercow should be let in. It will never happen. He didn't show enough respect for Boris when he was Speaker. It's a shame, because he would be a real asset.

  1. It already is. Tony's Cronies, Dave's faves and so it goes on, 600 or more unelected tossers: Ken Clarke and Frank Field are a glimmer of good in the list if it has to go on. Once upon a time I thought the Lords should be there as a safety net, I am not so sure these days and by these days I mean many years.

    1. I've always liked Ken Clarke too. Everything is buggered for the foreseeable future I think. It will never go back to normal, whatever that was.

    2. Seconded re Ken Clarke. He seems to talk sense often, whatever his politics

    3. If only Ken Clarke had not dropped out of the leadership race when Cameron won it... Clarke's Memoirs published a couple of years ago should be compulsory reading for all young MPs, whatever party. They could learn so much from him.

    4. They wanted a young, thrusting leader for some reason. They don't care about ability or experience. Hush Puppy wearing and cigar smoking Ken did not fit the image.

  2. My understand was that the House of Lords was going to be substantially reduced - not so it appears.
It wish this had been his parting shot.

    1. There is almost 900 of them now. Boris seems to be totally irresponsible in almost everything he does. He is, at heart, a dynasty builder.

  3. Agree with Rachel about Ken Clarke and Frank Field - nobody else on the list is very inspiring.

  4. English politics are too difficult for me to understand / but I grasp Rosemarys remark.

    1. It is becoming quite difficult for us to understand too.

  5. I also was a Bercow fan. Corbyn had all his suggestions which he has a right to put forward ignored. I despair and glad I live in Scotland now.

    1. Bercow was an egomaniac, but his heart was sort of in the right place. I learned to appreciate him.

  6. Building dynasties is fraught with difficulties in some political institutions. Just take his senate turning on our orange fellow this week, and just wait until November. No more house of trump.

  7. The only thing to be said in favour of having Jo Johnson is that he is actually quite sensible - so might be some kind of a counterbalance to the others who have been shoehorned in.
