That doggie in the window

I like this pub. It is in a prime location near the Abbey and is as old as the square it sits in - early 18th century. Much of the oak panelled interior survives from when it was a private house and in the Winter it has a real log fire with armchairs to sit in and newspapers to read. It has a back yard which is overshadowed by the Italianate chimney of a Victorian laundry, and the hot water for it was conveyed via an ornamental aquaduct leading direct from the source of the hot springs of the adjacent Roman Baths.

This was the last time that the endless supply of piping hot water was used for anything before it discharges into the river a few hundred yards away - at a rate of thousands of gallons a day - but work is going on at the Abbey now to use it for underfloor heating. At last some use is being made of Bath's most famous natural resource.

The Crystal Palace pub is owned and run by Fullers, the oldest brewery in Britain. Fullers is a London company and runs its pubs a bit too corporately for my liking. I don't like pubs which require the bar staff to dress in black, for instance.

Fullers was recently sold to the Japanese brewers Asahi, so I don't know what 'improvements' are going to be made in the near future.

Another British company sold to a foreign (i.e. non-British) nation.

  1. I am not sure how you are defining a "national asset being sold off", but the brewery is owned by the Fuller family and it is up to them what they decide to do with it.

  2. I lived in West Ken' (Barons Court) for a while, and we could see the Fullers sign on the old brewery. I think they've moved now.

    1. They are still on - or just off - the Hogarth Roundabout the other side of Chiswick.

    2. I once did 165 mph on the Hogarth Road. I was in a TVR Grantura Griffith (not driving).

  3. I agree with you Tom - it would indeed be sad if the interior was 'modernised'.

    1. I think - or know - that the place is Grade 2 listed, so no chance of that now.

  4. The brewing business is the subject of the sale, not the pubs.

    1. I know (sigh) but I WONDER IF IT WILL HAVE A KNOCK-ON EFFECT. Jesus.

    2. Fuller's pubs are under the umbrella of the named business, but I do (believe it or not) understand the difference between brewers and associated property businesses.

  5. As long as they don't decide to give up on us too like Nissan and Honda have, and putting peoples jobs and futures on the line.

    1. Beer doesn't travel very well, hence bottled India Pale Ale. Also, there are many micro breweries around now, thankfully.

  6. I was never a huge Fullers fan, but have been in their pubs. Interesting you say that they've sold to Adachi. SF's oldest (not very old, obvs.) Brewery, Anchor Steam, sold to Sapporo in 2017/2018.

    Heated flooring is the best.

  7. Have you changed your allegiance from The Bell to The Crystal Palace or do you go to both ? I just always imagine you in The Bell after work. Even if it’s Grade 11 listed, I’m sure it mostly applies to the outside. Our cottage was Grade 11 listed and they only stipulated the outside. When we moved, the people who bought it took out most of the original features inside 😢 Maybe they have changed the rules. XXXX
