Send the foreign nurses home?

Green Eyes returned home for Christmas last night, along with three of her childhood friends - all now young women.

She has a whole ten days off from her job in London as a paediatric nurse.

The latest attempt to placate xenophobes by this utterly useless and incompetent government (it was trying to placate xenophobes which caused this mess in the first place) was to suggest that we only allow immigrants into the country who earn a minimum of £30,000 per year.

A nurse of Green Eyes' status earns £23,000 per year, as do her Filipino colleagues on which the hospital depends because of severe staff shortages and NHS cut-backs.

  1. Those nurses don't look like they are from the EU.

    1. They are Filipino. That was the point.

    2. But they don't have to go home. I don't understand. The law has been £30,000 for non EU immigrants for some time. Nurses are in shortages employment category so exempt from it. Have I missed something?

    3. Rachel, what 'look' do you deem appropriate to be from the EU?

    4. Maybe I have missed something. I will have to check. If I have misunderstood I will be very hard on myself. If you have, I will be even harder.

    5. I hope they're exempt as they perform a vital service.

    6. I have just read that it would apply to EU members as well. I did not see any mention of nurses being exempt, but of course they could not apply it to them in any case. It would not surprise me if they had not even considered this. They haven't considered the implications of anything else up to now.

  2. When I heard this £30,000 business, my first thought was for new-recruit policemen, who I believe earn about £19,000. They come over ere...

    2. Your source is the Daily Mail Jack@. Sorry, but you will have to do better than that!

    3. Some London Underground drivers are earning in excess of £100,000 although the average is £60,000. These figures were released under Freedom of Information by Transport for London (TFL) last week.

    4. I wasn't looking for brownie points or anything, I just wanted to set the record straight. They get £36 per hour overtime and they are able to retire at 50. Rare these days.

    5. Kinell. No wonder they only want one driver per train.

  6. I sometimes start to think: "Let them do - and suffer the consequences" (I mean the politicians) - but then I am old enough to know: they - personally - won't. Our politician preach clean air - and have the biggest cars and chauffeurs, for instance. The state of our public transport is beyond all words - (maybe they will spill out nevertheless in a blogpost).
By the way: I tried the third time - start and end of numbers are correct. Of course I do not ask you for the middle - otherwise everybody might call you - but I will find out. Hopefully (that is my state of emotions beside politics).

  7. I believe they still allow smoking in the House of Commons bar.

  8. Well, I'm a nurse. I had toyed with the idea of working in the UK (birthplace) for a few years now that the children are adults.

My qualifications aren't recognized. I'm the equivalent of the State Enrolled Nurse. Becoming a care aide would be a huge waste of my skills. I'm qualified to work in the OR and have done so, both as a scrub and circulator.
