Return to St Kilda
I wish I could shake off this underwhelming sense of dread and foreboding about the future. I am even getting worried about our forthcoming trip to Venice.
If Theresa May's plans get put into action then I will be worried about the already cramped British Isles becoming swamped by the hoards of ex-pats who will be chucked out of their adopted European countries and sent back to a country which has changed beyond recognition since they left. They all must be pretty old by now, so their arrival will put an intolerable strain on the already over-stretched NHS.
Did you know that there are more Scottish people living elsewhere in the world than there are in Scotland?
If Scotland eventually gets its way and becomes a sovereign state in its own right, then all those Scots living in the rest of the world could quite justifiably return to the promised land and re-settle the Highlands again. Us English only have ourselves to blame for this. The Highland Clearances were brutal. There may be enough space, but what would they live on? Fruit-picking is all very well, but it is seasonal, and it's a short season.
The trip to Venice is going to cost less than a two-day trip to Scotland by train. It is very expensive up there.

I booked a tour of the Ukraine 3 months ago
ReplyDeleteOops. Take a steel helmet.
DeleteIf you can get past the Russians...
DeleteI tried last year to book a tour round Scotland by train but the cost was incredible. I could certainly have gone to Venice for less I would guess (unless I wished to stay at one of those twenty star luxury hotels!) How I envy you going to Venice - I am no longer mobile enough. I have been many times over the years but never tire of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping the water have dropped a little by the time we get there.
DeleteI hope that when you get to Venice, you will relax and enjoy your visit.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Me too!
DeleteIt's all one day at a time. Enjoy it for what it's worth. If a whole lot, celebrate. I don't get up in the middle of the night for kittens, but find them first thing in the morning.
ReplyDeleteThe future will take care of itself if you worry about it or not Tom...try not to. Venice in the winter is lovely.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Venice, what a way to celebrate. I do know what you mean when you mention that feeling of dread. Things just seem so uncertain.
ReplyDeleteThat sense of dread is horrible, but maybe it's just part of getting older. Sounds as if you have had a very tough time. But I agree with others who have posted here that you might feel better once you get to Venice, it's utterly oppressive all this awful Brexit crap and it hangs over everything all the time, like a bad smell. Maybe while you're in Venice it will be decided we can stay in the EU after all and then 95% of the mess our politicians have created will vanish like some evil smoke on a windy day.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to read that you are in a rather crappy headspace right now. Maybe the trip is exactly what you need. I'm guessing you've been there before? (to Venice, I mean). -Jenn
ReplyDeleteYour skills, abilities and experience would be why I would hire you over others. It's unfortunate that your assistant turned out to be horrid.
ReplyDeleteSorry - just deleted that rather negative rant.
ReplyDelete"This, too, will pass".
ReplyDeleteWe are all so insignificant in the vast and ongoing universe. In the last analysis, nothing really matters.
That's what depresses me.
DeleteWe could all go back to Scotland, I suppose, but we'd probably tilt the British Isles enough to tip the whole lot in the sea.
ReplyDeleteWhilst drifting away from Europe...
