Corsham's literate dogs

Look at this little old cast iron plaque a few inches off the pavement in the town of Corsham, Wiltshire. You have to bend very low and look very hard to read it, and because of yet another crappy photo, I will translate it.

BYELAW
FOULING BY DOGS FORBIDDEN
PENALTY ON CONVICTION £20

I wonder if they fine the dog or the owner?

  1. I would think that it would only be miniature dogs that would see it and, correct me if I’m wrong but, I don’t think dogs can read ! XXXX

    4. Oh, dear Jack@. Don't feel silly. I am sometimes too obscure for my own good.

  3. I once had the cheek to ask Brighton Council how much money they had received in fines for 'dog fouling'. Someone (a whistleblower) eventually sent my letter back to me, which was written all over, had attachments, and answered nothing. There had obviously been pure PANIC within the council chambers, wondering who I was and why I wanted the info!

  4. One question. What proof have you that dogs can't read? Answers on a postcard please.

    1. i knew a dog once who walked around town without a lead, and his owner would stop at a pub and ask him in an ordinary voice if he wanted to go home or come in. The dog made his own mind up and walked off without counting. Dogs usually don't like pubs.

  5. An interesting observation, dogs generally the don't like pubs. All those dogs in Scotland, at their masters feet, a different breed?
