P.S. Alexander MacCaull Smith is a really bad writer. I mean REALLY bad. How the fuck did he get where he is today?
Yes.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about McCall Smith except that I never read a book of his because I don't like the covers and the sheer number of titles always makes me suspicious of him because there wouldn't be so many of them if they were bloody good would there?
Take my word for it - he is execrably awful. He has many fans in this blogging world though.
DeleteI agree. He is the most boring writer that I ever read. What irritates me more is seeing his pronouncements upon the works of better writers. Thank you for posting this.
DeleteThink Stanley Baxter, but without any humour or talent.
DeleteNever heard of him. Googled to see if I was missing out. Don’t think so.
ReplyDeleteI liked the BBC radio 4 radio version of his Botswana lady detective story
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of him, but I did watch the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on Netflix and loved the characters.
DeleteHow can you possibly like that rubbish? It is an insult to Botswana.
DeleteDefinitely wasn’t fussed on The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency ..... don’t know any of his other work. XXXX
ReplyDeleteI ran to turn off the radio when it was being serialised.
DeleteThe books always looked like total shit to me. I don't think I opened one of them the entire 7 years I worked at the bookstore.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you can judge a book by the cover.
DeleteMaybe he's the reincarnation of Barbara Cartland.
ReplyDeleteI never read any B.C. but given the choice, I would over him.
DeleteI liked the radio serial Corduroy Mansions as there was a dog in it.
ReplyDeleteIs that the Scottish one? An insult to Scotland. He takes well-worn stereotypes of African or Scottish 'characters', then puts his own inane clichés into their mouths.
DeleteIt went Woof! (Not McWoof!)
DeleteI have never been a particular fan either Tom.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased to hear that Weave, but you would have been forgiven.
DeleteThank goodness, i read about 50 pages of the Detective agency book that everyone seemed to love and put it down.
ReplyDeleteAs much as 50?
