Setting fire to the phoenix

The view (part of) from our kitchen window the other day just before dusk. I am a bit lost for words at the moment, hence the pictures. To tell the truth I am missing some bloggers who used to post a lot but now stay silent, or post very occasionally. I used to take inspiration from them more than I realised at the time. I am trying hard not to use this space as a platform to complain all the time, but some things just have to be commented on - well I think so anyway.

The news that the Macintosh School of Art in Glasgow has pretty much been totally destroyed by fire just before the repairs to the damage caused by a previous fire were due to be completed is just what we didn't need to hear right now.

When the embers cool down, the initial shock diminishes and the investigators start work, someone is going to be in quite a bit of trouble. They will have to deal with the grief of the whole of Glasgow, let alone all the tourists who have come from all over the world just to see the building.

Oh well, at least nobody was hurt and maybe England will win the World Cup.

  1. Oh well, you'll just have to make do with me, John, Cro and Weave in the meantime who do post everyday.

  2. I read the news first, every morning, and am moved to rage and tears and can do nothing about detained children and lying politicians. A black woman in California stood up to border patrol and told everyone on the bus they did not have to answer or show proof of citizenship. In Bangor Maine the border patrol invaded a bus and said passengers must be citizens. Some passengers stood up. Fucking border patrol agents in tiny Bangor. Who is empowering these people to make up law. I can't rationally blog about it. I would be insane by day's end. I go to civil liberty events and register voters and encourage them to vote in November. The orange head let this genie out of the bottle; we have to vote it away.

    1. There are over-zealous people here as well. The Windrush scandal has only just been uncovered, but has been going on for about 3 years. They don't know how many people who have lived and worked in G.B. for years have been sent 'back' to the West Indies as illegal immigrants. They were never given paperwork 60 years ago, and Immigration is punishing them now. Children of immigrants (now adults) have been sent back, and they were born in this country.

  4. There is just too much to be sad about, including the loss of the Macintosh building in Glasgow, which I made a special trip to see in 1982.

  5. It is just such a shame about the Glasgow School of Art - wonderful building and so near completion again. Now hopes lie in ruins.

  6. I am glad I did get to see the Glasgow School of Art. I was really shocked to see there had been another fire. And thanks for writing your blog.

  7. We have been watching the devastating reports online, such a disappointment after the last one.

  8. Tom, I don’t profess to being one your absentee followers that upset you. But I would like you to know that read and enjoy your posts as I do with others that I follow. Life gets in the way and especially when health is most of the cause. Fatigue and depression are a constant battle and the blog world is a tool that lifts ones spirit when the closes in. Although I may not comment, know that I read your post every day.

    1. Please don't get me wrong, Doc. I was talking about other bloggers who used to post quite alot in the old days but have now all but gone - not commenters. I am sorry to hear that you may be a bit low and I do appreciate everyone who takes the time to come here. Well, most of them anyway.

  11. Do you play pétanque in Bath Tom? We had a glorious Sunday tournament, our club playing the Grenadier guards. My elbow today is very painful... Oh the joys of becoming increasingly decrepit?

    1. I have only ever played in a match once, and I had the honour of throwing the winning boule! I am beyond repetitive stress. I hurt all the time now.
