Last night - when reasonably sober by my standards - I bought this hat on eBay.
Now I know what you are thinking - it's not quite right, eh? Well you need not unduly worry because I am going to re-build it.
It is made from Donegal Tweed by - amazingly - Levi Strauss. The first thing I will do is get rid of that metal button with the maker's name on it.
It is being sent - at quite a high (and hidden) - cost, all the way from the USA. I believe it was made as a Winter cowboy hat.
H.I. refuses to believe that it will ever look right, but I intend to make her eat her words, or - failing that - I will eat my hat.
At least the chances of running into anyone else with the same hat would be extremely slim.
It's a good hat. I rather like it as it is.
ReplyDeleteYes, maybe.
DeleteYou're getting there Tom; it does look very similar to the one you showed us in the previous post.
ReplyDeleteGreetings Maria x
It is a question of how much compromise compared to effort, but isn't everything in life like that?
DeleteIt doesn't look American at all. Maybe you'll find it perfect as it is!
ReplyDeleteI hope so.
DeleteIt's quite colorful on my screen, with a lot of pink. Accurate?
ReplyDeleteWe, of course, will have to see it on your head to really judge.
Donegal Tweed is flecked with colour, like sprinkles on an ice cream.
DeleteBits of this hat are making their second trans-atlantic crossing to get to you, having already made the first voyage from Donegal to the U.S. I think that's neat. Don't you love eBay?
ReplyDeleteNo, not really. I bought a pair of Donegal Tweed trousers from our local Orvis (and American) shop and the tweed was sent from Ireland to the USA, from thence to Malaysia to be cut into trousers, then to England, then back to the USA where the turn-ups were measured and marked by Orvis, and from thence to China where the work was done, then back to the USA, and from there to the Orvis headquarters in Britain, and from there returned to the shop which is three doors down from where I live.
DeleteThe shop wanted to courier them from three doors away, but I said I would walk the 30 seconds and pick them up in person.
I am not proud of this.
I'm rooting for you. Hats away.
ReplyDeleteThe chocks have certainly gone.
DeleteIt is a fine hat. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to love it too. America makes fine hats.
DeleteThis hat cost $69+. The hats on USA websites are around $280 each. I think I may have a bargain.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely demand that when you have customised that hat we get a picture of you modelling it. And I am sure all your readers will endorse that!
ReplyDeleteYour demand is my wish, Weave. I strive to be your un-bottled genii.
DeleteI really like the tweed. Hadn't realised Levi Strauss made such hats.
ReplyDeleteNiether did I until I found it!
DeleteIt is a good hat as it is!
ReplyDeleteYes, I am hoping not to have to build it. I may spend the Winter wearing it as it is to decide.
DeletePut it through the washing machine. It will get that battered, soft look hehe
