Riots in Hackney

It's about time the Metropolitan Police stopped restraining young black men so severely that they kill them on the spot.

It's about time the Metropolitan Police stopped taking things personally.

If some drugged-up young man calls a copper a nasty name and resists arrest, then just do the decent thing and handcuff him after he has been subdued. Don't sit on him for three minutes until he has stopped breathing, later to be pronounced dead at a hospital.

Jesus Christ.

  1. The poor kids don't get away with life here, either. I didn't realize you had to read about it and think about it, too.

    1. The most extreme one I heard of was the Australian woman who went up to a police car in the U.S. recently to report an assault and was then shot by a another officer from inside the car. What the hell happened there, and would we have even heard about it if she was not Australian?

    1. I don't understand why they say he 'appeared' to 'try to swallow' something then do not explain what it was. They must know what it was by now even if it hasn't yet been properly analysed, so why not say what they suspect it to have been? They are pretty good at leaking everything else to the press.

    2. Even so - of course he would try to swallow his drugs. See what I said to Colonel Blimp below.

  3. The riots in St.Pauls, Bristol and other cities in the in the 70's all started because of bad policing.
When are they ever going to learn ?

    2. Well said Heron. Thieves, drug dealers, muggers, and burglars should be given a jolly good talking to and released. Otherwise they'll smash shops, loot, and burn everything in sight; and that would be the fault of the police (as you well know).

    3. I stopped going to demonstrations in the late 1960s, because the peaceful ones were always turned into violent ones by small groups of thugs out for a fight, wanton destruction or looting. It has always been like that, but the Metropolitan Police also contains a small group of violent thugs as well. They are not the perfect bobbies that Cro would like to believe they are from the security and tranquility of his rural French home.

  5. Policing in the UK does seem a little inconsistent. Drug swallowing thieves are usually made to stand on the naughty step for 10 mins; this one was restrained somewhat enthusiastically.

Riots in London; it must be Summer.

    1. Have you watched the CCTV footage of this particular incident? If you have, you will have seen the uniformed police officer grapple him to the ground as you would expect. Then, a large man in a hoodie arrives and lies on the suspect with his arm round his neck while the uniformed officer handcuffs him as would have been the right thing to do. The right thing to do after that would have been been to release the grip on the suspect's neck and let him breathe, but the hoodie man has him in a stranglehold for another two minutes while he kicks and struggles - probably trying to breathe. During this time the suspect dies, but since the police are not qualified to pronounce someone dead at the scene, he is pronounced dead at the hospital.

This is not standing on the naughty step, Colonel Blimp.

    3. You seem to think that I am always on the side of criminals and left-wingers, in the same way that you are always on the defensive about right-wingers and upstanding members of the community which you fled years ago. It's not as simple as that, Colonel.

    4. UK Policing, riot control, dealing with hardened criminals, etc, is seen as a joke by most of the world. It's probably the cosiest place in the world to be a criminal.

    5. Is that why you moved to France to grow vegetables?

    6. I've lived here for well over half my life. I've never been burgled, I leave my keys in the car, and never once do I lock the house (other than if I'm away for several weeks/months).

    7. Yes, you have a point. There isn't a big demand for stolen vegetables on the black market.

    8. Ok, here's a question for you - why didn't they Taser him? The Bristol police (take note, Rachel, in case you think I live in as peaceful stretch of the countryside as France without the CRS) Taser innocent and peaceful West Indians without any qualms whatsoever.

The thing is that most people survive a Tasering, but not asphyxiation or loss of blood to the brain, no matter how many drugs they have swallowed in the 5 seconds leading up to strangulation.

    9. The Bristol police are Avon and Somerset, same as Bath. We don't even have a bloody police station here any more - it moved to Bristol - but I still lock my car and house.

    1. Oh, so you know what happened do you? Have you watched the CCTV footage? Have you ever heard of a recreational drug that will kill you within two minutes of swallowing it? Kill you on the spot without the usual few hours of coma that even heroin would induce?

You ought to settle down with Cro in France.

    2. No I don't watch tv news and no I have not seen it. He put something in his mouth and the policeman tried to get it out. The investigation has not taken place yet.

    3. It doesn't matter what he put in his mouth or if they tried to get it out. If you watch the clip you will see the obvious. A large man keeps him in a stranglehold for about 2 minutes and he appears to be having difficulty breathing until he loses consciousness.

If you watch the clip you will - unless you are of Cro's disposition - be forced to admit that the arrest was inappropriately forceful, and I only hope that the truth about it is not quietly suppressed by the inquest, otherwise there will be yet more riots this Summer.

Some of you seem think that I don't agree with arresting criminals or drug-dealers who break the law and run the risk of a conviction. Like I said to Colonel Blimp, I am not as simple-minded as him.

    4. He had drugs. He was not a saint. He probably had a knife or a gun. He was not a shoplifter in Bath.

    5. Oh, so you have heard the results of the inquest after all. And there was me thinking you didn't know the details, or hadn't even seen the CCTV footage. What a gullible fool I am.
