Running toward death

Quick question - Why can't they make men's trousers with deeper pockets these days? Stuff keeps falling out of mine, even just sitting in a chair. Surely they cannot save that much money with an inch less cotton?

I heard an expert on Time talking the other day, and he came up with a theory to explain the seemingly endless Summers of childhood.

When we are children, he explained, we have a virtually empty memory bank. This means that as we learn, time slows down  to allow us to savour the moments far more than if we are troubled by unfolding events which we have been expecting through experience. We live life in the moment, and the length of that moment is relative to our inexperience.

It is horribly ironic that as we become older and slower, time races faster and faster.

  1. As I get older I understand my mother more when she was always talking about how long she had left. If we went for an eye appointment or similar she would say "that's the last one of those, I won't be going again, I'll be dead by next time". She would then sit down and write a letter of thanks. I used to be horrified.

  2. My mother became bored with eating and wished she could just take pills for food!

  3. I see it slightly more simply. As children all weather is great; rain, shine, snow, or whatever. When we are older (not me) we hate the cold, hate the heat, and hate everything in between.

  4. I own a small, retractable tape measure that I carry to shop for clothing (once every other year, or so), and measure inseams and shirt lengths and such. As an old lady, I stare down and do not budge for a young upstart who feels entitled to the same bit of clothes rack. Surely you can measure the length (from the waist seam) of your favorite pants pocket and then check the pockets being offered. I'd accompany it with the muttered statement, "Damn pockets are too short" to any one who looked askance.

    1. I refuse to take a tape measure to my tailors. That is their job...

  5. I read that report too. It does go by so fast now. I used their suggestions on my daughter as she had yet again lost her cell phone.

    1. By the time she finds it, it will be obsolete.

  6. How does that theory square with being able to remember people and places 60 years ago but not whether we have taken our morning pills? Is the brain too full of the old stuff?
As to pocket lenght, longer pockets are the further north you go along with shorter arms - allegedly.

    1. We revert to childhood. Some old things are lucky enough to revert to nappies just before the end.

  8. You are ripe for rich Saville Row's pickings, Tom. Though you'll have to have "deep" pockets in the first place - for an investment to last you to the end of your days.

I recognize what you describe well. It never perturbed me till about two years ago when I realized that I had lived more of my life than what is ahead of me. What perturbs me even more that my son (in his mid twenties) has already cottoned on to how fast time flies towards the inevitable event. I wish it had taken him as long as it did me. Or maybe, who knows, it's better to recognize the shortage of life before the shutters start coming down, doors closing.

    Big sigh,
    U

    1. Never the less, I appreciate all those pictures of beautiful young women that you post up, even though I know you too are a beauty. P.S. - I cannot afford to sit/lay down too much. Moaning is my only luxury.
