Sham Castle

Wind and rain is thrashing the South West today and it has never really become proper daylight. The middle ground of the hills outside town have a backdrop of thick, rainy mist which is spliced with the sky, making Bath look much flatter than it actually is.

I was supposed to recieve the framed paintings and take them upstairs, but the bubble-wrap would never dry from the soaking it would get in the short distance between the van and the house, so I have postponed it until tomorrow.

Neither H.I. or I slept much last night - me worrying about what the future holds for me in terms of work and the arthritus which has now reached my right foot (one of only two which I depend on for walking and standing up), and her... well, probably catching insomnia from me. I am difficult to live with right now. The difference is that I can just go back to bed, whereas she has gone out in it to teach all day. I do not, of course, mention my ambition to return to the pit. That would be cruel.

I have been trying not to even think about Trump recently, let alone talk about him, but what with the very public, weekend auditions at his golf club and his Tweets demanding an immediate apology from the actors who pleaded with the Vice President Elect not to bring back slavery, it is difficult.

I am really not looking forward to the French elections, but I suppose I could make a bit of money by betting on Marie Le Pen.

The world has had enough of The Silent Majority now.

  1. Have a look at the little nick in the horizon, with Sham Castle silhouetted in front of the sham sky. Embiggen it!

    1. Yes, but why couldn't start off like that, then get better? That would be character-forming.

  5. Once again vanished, my comment... (Five days away and they don't know you anymore...) So again: I love that picture, it is beautiful! And I hope your arthritis stops!

    1. Yes, I didn't even know I had taken it until I looked closer. Arthritus isn't renowned for stopping, unfortunately. I am hoping for a good day/not so good day outcome.

  6. Acknowledging that you might be hard to live with at the moment is very grown up...and consideration for H.I. is a good thing...and you know that this too shall pass.

    1. Wise words. I was hard to live with.

    2. Don't tell me you have fulfilled Ursula's expectations and died, Terry, or is it that you don't live with that person anymore? I like the idea of someone blogging from the other side.

    3. There's a moral there somewhere, but it is kept secret by the laywers.

  7. What a wonderful photograph! and your first paragraph is so beautifully apt. Speaks to your powers of observation and language. As for your miseries, I wish I could deliver some optimistic message, but I would be lying (something I'm not very good at) if I told you everything will be alright. Life sucks and then you get old and die. If you are lucky you have someone like H.I. at your side.

  8. Hey Tom: Just wanted to pop in and say I feel quite the same. I have had only one good sleep since the election. He is a complete disgrace.

    2. Oh, you didn't! It's good to know that we're not alone. I have a feeling I'll be stirred up about everything for quite some time.

    3. Like the rest of the world - you are definitely not alone.

  9. Unfortunately, I am weather sensitive and that kind of day would make me down. Two days of that and I want to slit my wrists. Much going on here too and friends tell me "it'll all work out". Guess we just have to hang on for the ride. As with Shawn, Steve Martin said once, "I'm just happy as can be knowing I have to die one day". Look for the silver linings is the only thing I can tell you.

    1. I wonder what sort of job he will make of reunifying the nation? Let's hope it is better than Thatcher's.

    2. Mrs Thatcher saved this country from bankruptcy.

    3. If not, then we are just beginning to reap the benefits of her salvation.

    4. We reap what the Socialists put us back into each time they are in power

    5. Oh dear, and I strived so hard to heal the division here. Come on, admit it - there are complete cunts everywhere in politics. The Socialists are a bunch of useless ones, and the Conservatives a bunch of useless ones too. The Lib Dems are useless, and UKIP are both usless and nasty. There isn't much to choose from, which is why I am monarchist.

I find people who personally gain most from a party stick to it - like 'self-made men'.

    6. I agree. David Cameron was a thick cunt. Blair was a clever cunt only to himself. The Lib Dems are a complete set of wet cunts and Farage is a devious cunt. But Margaregt Thatcher was a clever cunt.

    7. Margaret Thatcher was unique amongst her peers for one reason only - she had absolutely no sense of humour, and before you disagree with me, this is well documented and coroborated by everyone. Her cleverness was a sort of logical street-wisdom which took on very strong elements of phsychopathy, and her saving grace was that she - unlike Blair - did not surround herself with full-blown psychopaths as advisors. She did, however, just get rid of people who opposed her, which is PRETTY FUCKING RUTHLESS AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. So you and a load of other people made money out of her legislation? You think that impresses me? Ha ha!

    8. I used to work with John Biffin (wonderful man) and she got rid of him!

    9. I have no desire nor intention to seek to impress you about anything when I speak to you.

  10. I googled Sham Castle to have a good view. It is exactly as you captured it, in a notch on a hill, but not in your lovely fog. And, it's on Golf Course Road. Any association with the Prez Elect?

    1. Thanfully no - and I don't even play golf. He has a golf course up in the Highlands of Scotland, and even that is too close for my liking. New York will soon be too close as well.

  11. The photograph is a beauty even if the weather isn't.

Cold and very windy here. When I do venture out in a little while, I am hoping to stay on the ground.

Continued best wishes to you and yours.

    1. The weather is beautiful, but I am glad that I can lok at it through a window today. Having said that, the rain is so heavy that it is coming in through the roof - this is what a certain wind direction does here.

  12. I love the cast of Hamilton and what they did--they were actually very civil and polite.

I would love to see the show myself, but tickets are still upwards if $1000 and it's sold out for over a year. The soundtrack is amazing.

    1. $1000+ a ticket would be peanuts to the Vice Elect. We ain't having no broke Vice Presidents round here. No we're not.

    2. We saw Hamilton a year ago, having bought tickets at face value 6 months earlier. I can testify that it is every bit as good as all the hype claims. When we left the theatre all we wanted to do was go back in and see it again.

    3. Really? Maybe I should see it, but I hate musicals.

    4. I, too, avoid musicals. This is different.

    5. I worked for Cameron Macintosh once - doesn't it just come down to a load of gays prancing about and being as noisy as they are in bars. or am I turning into Trump?

    4. He looks like he drinks too much carrot juice.

  14. Sounds to me as though you need a serious couple of days of warm sunshine to lighten that feeling Tom - so let's hope that the weather soon changes to bring it to your doorstep.

  15. Marine Le Pen fills me with fear. She's someone who never says anything too outrageous to the media, but you know what she's thinking is crazy. Heaven help us (other than it would be the end of the EU if she was elected).
