They are half-way through electrifying the train line between Bristol Temple Meads and London, Paddington right now, but how are they getting the electricity?
Here's a suggestion too sensible to be ever carried out by profiteers more interested in income than social benefits.
Bring back steam.
How? Each train has a tiny (the size of a fridge) nuclear reactor on it which is housed in a near disaster-proof capsule, and that is controlled by the engineers and heats water to boiling point constantly, powering high-tech pistons which bring the train up to speeds of around 200 MPH, just like it did in the old days.
Why will this never happen in our life-times? Because places like China will be in control of our nuclear output, silly, and other foreign power generators have 'invested' too much in our 'infrastructure' to want to see such a simple solution to an ordinary social problem about transport.
