Expert advice only, please

My daughter has just sent me a worried message regarding this photo. I am on the right and her boyfriend is on the other side. I thought I had better explain, otherwise you might not have spotted the age difference, for there is little.

She is worried that I might have some eye defects, because my eyes reflect the flash in white, rather then the usual red which tend to appear in ordinary people, and not cats or black labs.

In a young child this could signify a rare cancer, but in someone my age it would be more likely the beginning of cataracts.

Now, before you all jump in and pretend to be experts, I would like most of you to keep your mouths shut and leave it to thems as know best to tell me if I might need to see an opthalmic expert.

Thanks.

    1. P.S. The poster just to the right of A's head is about the stupid war which I am always going on about. The Iraq one. It's an old poster now.

  2. There was a young man from Devizes
Whose balls were of two different sizes
One was so small it was nothing at all
    And the other was big
    And won prizes.

There are other versions as no doubt you know. I know nothing about eyes.

  3. Don't panic. It's probably just light reflecting off the optic nerve. I would never go to a doctor without symptoms, and then only if they were painful or impeded some activity I wanted to engage in, e.g., sex, but not washing the floor.

    1. Just what I needed to hear, thank you Shawn. Yes I had heard of the white optic nerve in my researches, but the trouble with research into medical maters is that by the time you stop, you seem to be dying of everything you have read the symptoms of. Consulting the medical pages on the net, the white optic nerve reflection os right at the bottom of the list, because - after all - they are dealing with disease or illness. I have got this far - 64 - without the need for glasses, except in the half dark for very small print, so I feel very lucky.

    1. If my eyesight was obviously deteriorating, then I would probably go to an optician, but I think I will just carry on as normal. My father died registered blind through cataracts, but they didn't want to do anything about them at the time. He used to listen to the T.V. every night!

  5. People seldom notice that their sight is going dim due to cataracts, as it is very gradual. Because I had my eyes checked out every few years, I was made aware of my condition. When the time came to remove them, it was quick ( through a laser) and so rewarding. I realized that colors were so much more vibrant and white was stunning.

What is the harm of getting your eyes checked out?
