A new life

I have an image of the Hattatts pushing a hand-cart stacked high with all their worldly possessions off an overcrowded boat and beginning the long walk down the muddy road which leads from Felixstowe to Norwich now.

Let's hope they get past the border control, manned by a stern-looking woman in a harsh uniform who will be asking for their 'papers'. It's a long way back.

  1. Darling Tom,

Still behind the Iron Curtain.....or, rather, the Net Curtain......at the moment, packing the merest of essentials since the darlings at Pickfords will do the rest. Just as they packed it all, stored it all and, now, will deliver it all, we shall not be lifting a finger save to point the boxes in the right directions.

Diplomatic immunity will secure our safe passage, of that we have no doubt.

Watch out, darling Tom, Bath is not so very far from us now!

  2. Reminds me rather of the leadminers of Swaledale. When the bottom dropped out of the lead market here in the UK at the turn of the century, many miners put all their possessions on a handcart, pushed it to the coast and boarded ships to the Americas (those who could afford it of course). Suspect the Hattatts will have rather better possessions than those lead miners did.

    1. I would ask, but think it might be a bit rude to. Anyway, I've seen the interiors photos, and you could only get one lamp stand on a hand-cart.

  4. They will be made to feel very welcome by all in this county, not least by me. We may be a bit different over here in the east but take the time to get to know us and you will see we are some of the best.

    1. Are Norfolk people super-sensitive to a bit of a piss-take as well?

    2. No, there were so many things I could have said, and tried out here in fact, to join in the piss take that in the end I decided to go the other way.
