My second most favourite film, the first being 'A Canterbury Tale', also by Robert Powell.
When I was about 8 years old, I was sent out of class for singing this tune, and was demoted as a result.
The stupid, ignorant teacher had never heard of Powell and Pressburger. This is the ONLY reason I cannot speak fluent French. When I watch this film, I just don't care.
I'm going to Oxford for a couple of days tomorrow, so I see you when we get back.
Sweet dreams.
I don't know what this is because I cant listen to it now but I'm glad you posted it.
ReplyDeleteEvery one of Powell and Pressburger's films are just wonderful. Have a look at one, and - if you are not a cynical film-critic - you will fall in love with them.
DeleteEnjoy yourself in Oxford.
Deletezzzzzzzzzzzzz
I vaguely remember a whirlpool
ReplyDeleteIs that the same film?
Yes, that's the one. I took my daughter on a holiday to Argyle when she was about 12, and we stayed off the Sound of Jura near where that whirlpool was filmed.
DeleteIf I had arrived 2 weeks earlier, I could have met the man who was filmed spinning around in the engineless boat - for real - in the Corry Vrecken for the film, but he had died.
The Corry Vrecken can be heard for 20 miles inland when the conditions are right - or wrong - so fierce is the whirlpool.
Thos films are even more magical than Harry Potter, and shot during wartime!
'The Orpheus Choir' of Glasgow who sing most of the music are still going strong, over 70 years after this movie was made. Blissfully wonderful to know.
ReplyDeleteOh for a compartment NOT over the wheels. Such class.
ReplyDeleteWe have our methods, Sir.
DeleteOne of my all time favourites too. The crassness of some teachers - I worked with such folk for years, so I know what harm they can do. (and what good a good one can do too.)
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that often the least qualified people to look after the young, vulnerable and innocent get the jobs?
DeleteThere were a couple of good teachers in my school, but they were either too weak or too strong.
I had not been aware of this film but I have just returned from a trip to Argyll. We were going to the Corryvreckan whirlpool but I was unable to manage the journey. Perhaps next year.
ReplyDeleteI hated school, none of the teachers took the time to know me.
