What is a 'Tosser'?

The difference between a 'wanker' and a 'tosser' is a subtle, but very important one.

Will Self (pictured above) is, for example, a classic tosser, but he falls short of being a complete wanker by dint of his having produced some worthwhile bits and pieces in the past.  Yes, the past, I'm sorry to say.  He has swallowed quite a few dictionaries since then.

'Tossing' is - to all intents and purposes - pretty much the same thing as 'wanking', but that is the beauty and subtlety of the English language as spoken in the colloquial - you have to learn the difference.

God bless again.

  1. I am going to redress the balance of the last few posts by posting up some all-time 'heros' and role-models, and - right now - they all fall into the religious category, for some reason that God only knows (what I'd do without you).

  2. Good one! This was a lesson in English which I still needed. I will try to use both terms in the near future. This should not pose a problem as there always seem to be plenty of both kinds of people around. Nobody should complain; I'm just furthering my education!

    1. Do you have a charming German accent? I was playing cards with a young, female Japanese friend, and we were all quietly arranging our cards after the deal, when she must have considered herself to have a bad hand.

She quietly said to herself, "Borrocks".

  3. WS does take himself extremely seriously; is that an essential part of being a 'tosser'?

    1. If ever I feel as though I am being to negative about my fellow humans, or think that I spend too much time sneering at them, I listen to Will Self and suddenly feel a lot better. It's called 'Self Help'.

  5. Negative on the charming German accent. I have mastered the English 'th'. When I speak my native German dialect, I sound like a pig farmer. No charm there, either! ;)

    1. If you describe ourself as sounding like a pig farmer, then I think there is plenty of scope for charm...
