It doesn't seem like a year since I last came back from the Bath Boules competition in Queen Square, somewhat
piste from Rosè wine and looking forward to din-dins. The obelisk was erected in honour of the Prince of Wales and his Consort by Richard 'Beau' Nash, and restored by a mate of mine about 20 years ago. I tried to sit in it's shade (they were designed purely in order to cast a shadow), but couldn't wait the 40 minutes it would have taken for the shadow to creep up to me.
Bath Boules isn't quite what it used to be for me, because although there seem to be many veterans wandering around, I hardly recognise any of them. They must have come in having heard about it a few years ago, and scared the rest of the old lot away.
One or two of the
Monty Pythons used to turn up every year, and Joanna Lumley was a regular too - this was before Miles Kington died, so I guess they are not invited these days.
Somehow, it always seems to be good weather for it, and this year was no exception. I left before the finals, and I have no idea who was in the lead. It's a social event, darling.
That's a fine erection; but maybe the 'boules' no longer deliver!
ReplyDeleteHello Tom:
ReplyDelete"Almost everything that is great has been done by youth". Obelisks and Boules clearly no exception.
A couple of fine comments from both of you. You make me proud to be your follower (18th century slang for footman follower: 'fart-catcher').
ReplyDeleteThat looks very impressive and your shadow shots are a lot better than mine.
ReplyDeleteYes, that obelisk is quite something, Moll. Don't know about the shadows, though.
ReplyDeletecro beat me to the "erection" comment
ReplyDeleteThat's the trouble with working nights, John - someone always raids the cupboard before you get home for breakfast.
