The Vicar archeologist...

Two posts in one day - sorry. I had to show you my latest impulse purchase. A 'Dunn & Co.' English, Panama hat in UNUSED condition, which I found in a charity shop today.

I paid £25 for it, which is a lot for a charity shop, but when you consider that - when sold in the original outlet - it would have been about three times that much, it was made in England (even though it is called a 'Panama'), and that 'Dunn & Co.' went out of business about 2 or 4 years ago, I reckon it was a bargain.

Why? Because it has a very HIGH crown of the sort that you simply do not get from Chinese or other foreign imports, and it is one of the last of items sold by a traditional British outfitters which is now extinct.

When I buy my new linen suit to go with it, maybe I will have overcome my compulsion to buy something every day, just to make myself feel positive about the future/past - it makes no difference to me, just so long as I look like Basil Rathebone during the course of my 70th decade.

Roll on Summer - roll on Death.

  2. Fabulous looking hat. What's that thing that looks like a bird flapping around you?

  3. Funny you should ask, MBJ - Behind me is one of Her Indoor's paintings, depicting swallows flying over a hill in The Quantocks. The shape which seems to be flying in front of the hat and pretending to be another swallow is a part of the damaged, antique mirror (silvering missing) which is trying to look like one of the birds! Very serendipitous.

  8. Only 2nd?

I wish I could, Janet, were it not for the reasons below.

It's better than quickly revealing myself, Olive. I'm now on a register, so that has slowed me down.
