I spent quite a while selling the idea of using the 'extinct' Painswick stone for the project I will be doing for my client, and eventually - after a bit of horse trading - he agreed that it would be a good idea.
You may remember that I went to the old quarry and found a piece small enough to do the job, but the main man was not there so I estimated the price I would have to pay for it. I deliberately over-estimated it at about 200 - 300 pounds, plus transport.
When my client finally agreed the go-ahead I got back to the Painswick quarry and began to make arrangements. At the last moment I reminded the seller that he had not yet given me a price for it, so he did. £1,680 - plus transport.
Greed and opportunism are rife right now, but not at Portland.
I know costs have risen, but that was extortionate
ReplyDeleteYep.
DeleteI'm happy to pay a good price for custom work. That said, with opportunism operating at peak levels, I get 3 estimates on anything I am doing.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you can only get one price.
DeleteDoes that mean then that you try a different quarry and a Portland one that sells you a Portland boulder for a lot lot less?
ReplyDeleteOne ton of good Portland stone which I have already paid for today will drop on my doormat on Wednesday.
DeleteOh dear - sounds a seller's market there at the moment.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's a market of sorts.
DeleteGood job you have more than one source and supplier.
