I listened to this WW2 Bomber Command audio last night and it inspired us to watch The Dam Busters one more time.
The Dam Busters used to be shown on TV quite a lot a few years ago, but not so much these days. People getting older, its relevance is waning and the name of the dog doesn't help much either.
I like the Yorkshire accents in the first recording... Ok...Ok...
Oh, by the way, there was a young, confused stranger who turned up on our doorstep last night. He was still there this morning so I told him to fuck off.
ReplyDeleteYeap when he said searchlight , that was pure Yorkshire
ReplyDeleteMy father was a navigator in a Lancaster
I know nothing of his wartime exploits
I think he never flew over enemy territory
Mine was an Air Gunner in Bomber Command. He crashed on his own in Kent, but I think you know that story.
DeletePirates eldest brother died in a a Lancaster..it had only five hours on the clock having been just delivered.
ReplyDeleteNot many survived.
DeleteMany WW II brave pilots sadly lost their lives. Today, Terminator Drones, Switchblades are being used by the Ukrainians.
ReplyDeleteAnd everyone else.
DeleteIf one didn't know it sounds like it is a radio comedy show of the 1940/50s, a send up of the actual thing.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean.
DeleteI used to teach the grandson or great grandson (?) of the Avro family. Anthony Verdon-Roe was a very bright boy, and was extremely interested (aged 13) in film-making. I wonder what became of him? Very nice boy.
ReplyDeleteIf he's known as Bobby and born in 1965 and went to Ashdowne House and 0Stowe he's a racing driver.
DeleteSmall world. I restored the stonework of Ashdown House (if it is the same one near Lambourne) some years ago. I did a post on it not so long ago.
DeleteAlso, my father's office was next door to Barnes-Wallis's at Weybridge.
DeleteI know Handley Page's great grand daughter.
