Trust

I haven't used my eBay account for selling for a few years now, but I decided I should sell a top quality Armani suit on it a few weeks ago, and today I began the listing.

I spent about an hour taking photos and measurements before filling out the listing, then it came time to submit it all. Fees so far: 36p.

I have been registered with PayPal for years, but eBay have recently decided that they want to make the money that PayPal does by scrapping the old relationship and setting up their own payment system.

As a business seller (which they forced me to be), before they let you sell anything you have to complete an agreement which allows a private company to gain access to your bank account, and in my case this company could go into my account and help itself to whatever it wants up until DECEMBER 31st 2037. Certainly not!

The company is called something which begins with the word, 'Trust', Somehow I am not inspired.

So if you know of any 6' 3", 14 stone man who would like to dress to impress for a fraction of the price that the suit cost when bought in New York, point him in my direction.

  1. There are plenty of other ways to sell instead of Ebay. I recently bought a table from something called "preloved" where I collected it myself and handed over the money.
Ebay, like so many organisations, have become mega greedy.

  2. Someone in China stole my eBay account a few years ago. I have not been inclined to set up another.

  4. Cannot relieve you of your suit but I just went for a closer look at the recent missives from Ebay that were languishing in my inbox and was rather astonished at their audacity. From my reading, it seems that sellers in NZ, as an interesting aside, will be remitted in USD and will need a bank account at a bank of Ebay's choosing. I'm surprised that sellers are sticking with them. Account closed now, thanks for the prompting. Good luck with the suit!

    1. When these huge companies have more financial power than any government they can do what they want. I don't like the way things have been going for the last 20 years.

  5. We used ebay (buyers) quite extensively for a time. We used a credit card with a purposely low limit that was unattached to any account. They changed things up and wanted us to provide our bank information or be suspended. We chose to be suspended. They had no need for our banking information. Interestingly enough, after several months of sending us warnings that we would not be able to purchase until we filled out their form (which wanted our banking information and account numbers), e-mails that were ignored and sent to the trash, ebay suddenly simply dropped it all. We still occasionally purchase, using the same credit card.

    1. They will do what they can get away with, which is more and more these days. Their power becomes so great that they can take on whole countries. Individuals can resist by telling them to stuff their services, but every penny counts to those greedy sods.

  6. I suspect ebay will lose many customers with this new requirement. ebay wants you to keep the jacket. There might be a wedding and you'll need the right outfit.

    1. It is more likely to be a funeral. eBay does not care if it loses customers, because - as Avus points out - you are just as likely to go to a different company which they also own.

  7. I often used Ebay to buy/sell motorcycles. Like you, they required me to be a "trader". I used their new system once only - their charges are now super high. I use Gumtree (which actually belongs to Ebay) these days. They are purely a selling site - no auctions and you pay up front for your advert at a reasonable price. I have just sold a lawnmower there, quickly and easily.

I wonder how long it will be before Ebay decides to make more money out of it?

    1. They forced me to become a business trader by refusing to give me the money for a sale until I signed up as one. They held me to ransom. If any competition becomes a threat to a company the size of eBay, they simply buy it. They make more money by operating at a loss for a few years than not making the owner an offer they can't refuse.

  8. To be honest I give things away. I remember the same little old man came and took away my spinning wheel and Georgian dollshouse and my daughter said he is probably selling them on Ebay. Vintage clothes are the in thing though. I use Paypal as my go to account for many a thing, I am not about to give bank details to every flipperty - gibbert on the internet!

    1. Do you remember the scandal of the donation of clothes to a 'charity' which was in fact a private company who sold them on and kept most of the money? I am appalled by the now common practice of hanging on to your bank details when it is illegal to do so. The government does nothing about it. My car insurance company recently told me that they are just going to take the next premium out of my account on a certain date unless I tell them not to. You have to opt out with everything now.

  9. Armani is wonderful. Good luck that you can sell it for a good price.
Since 10 years or so I haven't been on Ebay - and don't miss it.
In Bavaria (the village doesn't even have a baker - I drive 3 km to the next town) I have to buy some things online, mostly via amazon - but it is not the same as seeing and feeling what you buy before.

    1. Covid brought the online companies a huge proportion of the market and forced small businesses out. It will never be the same again. Too much money to be made from things we cannot do without. We are milked like cattle.

  10. I've not used eBay to sell only to make purchases. Like you, I certainly wouldn't want any entity to have unfettered access to my bank acct. And why for so many years...? How odd.
