Levelling up, my arse

This is supposed to be an update on the situation regarding the rescue of my friend's Ukrainian wife's parents, who are close to the Moldovan border but too scared to travel the last few miles for fear of being killed by Russian soldiers along the route.

He has set out for Eastern Europe today, but does not know his precise destination. There are a number of options for them, the most likely one being a 9 hour bus ride to a city where they can be picked up by their son in law.

On his way to this as yet unknown place, my friend will have to complete several hours of online form-filling on his mobile phone, and even then there is no guarantee of his in-laws obtaining a visa. The new legislation which supposedly allows family members to join relatives in Britain only comes into force today, otherwise he would have applied much earlier. Actually he did apply much earlier and was told that they do not qualify. His wife is beyond distraught. Each day - each hour - that passes, her parents stand a greater chance of being killed.

As with every other bit of legislation which greatly affect people's lives, the rules governing Ukrainians entering this country has been grindingly slow to come into force. How many u-turns have been made to date as a result of public outrage on both sides of the political spectrum?

Boris Johnson's cabinet are not just incompetent, they are squalid. They have treated everyone as fools and cared for nothing but protecting anyone with any clout in the world of finance, and that includes the oligarchs who Boris had been sheltering up until everyone else showed him up by setting examples.

He has survived by sheer luck alone.

  1. Think we all wish your friend good luck in this endeavour. As for this government, what is there to say? Luckily the country as a whole forces them to act. Perhaps in all seriousness their wretched behaviour will force many people to vote them out, but what replaces them I don't know...

    1. What replaces them is going to be too late in any event.

  2. I believe that democracy in this country is a myth and it does not adhere to the definition of the word. We might as well scrap it and call it a dictatorship.

    1. Totally agree with this.

    2. That applies to Russia more than here. Even though I moan, I consider myself lucky to live in Britain.

    3. We have neither a good democracy nor a good dictator. They are too weak to be in charge.

    4. Their weakness is just one of their distinguishing qualities. Mendacity is another.

  3. Well I read The Times every day and frankly Boris has gone strangely silent. I wonder why.

  4. Really hoping there is a good outcome for your friend’s in-laws. Respect for those who are helping the Ukrainians leave for safety. I hope any that come here will have a warm welcome from all of us Brits.

All this is Boris' "Falklands factor".....

Why are we the only ones who are not saying Get here, be safe, then let's sort the paperwork

  7. Wishing your friends a happy outcome. I can’t imagine how scary it must be for them. Thinking of all the people in the same situation. XXXX

    1. At times like these I feel fortunate, but times like these are changing faster than we can keep up.

  9. I hope your friend is able to rescue his in-laws. It appears this is probably the only way to get people out and safe in England. (Did you see that an American college student (Jack Sweeney) has created a twitter bot tracking Russian oligarchs jets?) Wartime shelter in place vs. the oligarchs freely travel...

    1. Planes and boats have to have trackers fitted to them by maritime law. Anyone can follow any vessel. You can go on a site on the net and see where any boat is in the world at any given time, and it will even give you the complete history and dimensions etc. of it as well.

    2. I know that the plane tracker only tracks non military flights. Is that the same for shipping?

    3. Yes, I am sure it is. Google Earth has fuzzy spots hovering over army bases like the SAS one in Herefordshire, although I am told you can buy the military grade version. The enemy has satellites anyway, so why try to hide?
