DIY government

There were not many dry eyes amongst anyone who witnessed the reunion between Nazanin Zghari-Ratcliffe's little daughter and her mother - "Mummy!" - this week, now that she has finally been released after all these years.

Why did Britain not return the £380 million which Iran spent on a load of tanks in the 1970s sooner? Because the Americans told us not to. Even now, an ex U.S. Defence Secretary is accusing the British government of funding terrorism by settling the old debt, but hopefully Joe Biden will not punish us any more than we have already punished ourselves.

Of course, it did not help when Boris Johnson stood up and blurted the first thing to come into his head by saying N.Z-R.'s purpose in Iran was to 'train journalists'. That probably added three more years onto her trumped-up sentence.

Most people have been far too preoccupied with the ghastly situation in Ukraine to even think about the stupid parties in Downing Street or the terrible knock-on effect of leaving the European Union, but what does Boris do? He gives a speech to a handful of Tories which he knows will be broadcast worldwide, and embarrasses us all - yet again - by comparing the desperate people of Ukraine to the freedom-loving British people who voted for Brexit. If any half-intelligent people did not think that our prime minister is a dangerous and incompetent liability before, surely they must do now.

The freedom-loving British people have learned to just get on with it and hope that the government do not put too many obstacles in their way when they try to help. Tens of thousands of Brits have offered a home to Ukrainian refugees, but my friend with the Ukrainian wife is currently stuck in Bucharest with her and her parents as they try to get visas from the Home Office to allow them to go through the British arrival gate on their way to Bath, where a large and comfortable house awaits them. It is going to take so long that he will probably have to leave his wife and her parents there so he can come back to work here and wait for them.

Pritti Patel says that without checks, Russian spies will infiltrate the borders and this will be a threat to national security. We have a long history of knowingly hosting Russian spies. We have even contributed to their numbers. The Salisbury poisoners entered Britain on tourist visas.

If - as he surely will - Boris Johnson stands on the top of the dung-heap and crows about the wonderful spirit of the blitz as if he was the reincarnation of Winston Churchill, then I think the Home Office should consider re-introducing the stocks. Bath council have a very serviceable set (above) in the entrance of the Guildhall which I am sure they would gladly donate to Westminster.

  1. Maybe I should have entitled this post, 'Taking Back Control'.

  2. Maybe you could add a few stone stocks to dot around the country - I can think of a few more folk who could do with a spell in them.

    1. I'm sorry if I have made you think about all this again on your weekend off, Weave. What depresses me more than anything else is the total lack of honour and the absence of any sense of shame or culpability. I use to feel protected from criminals to a certain extent, but now we are really on our own, both personally and as a nation. They lie as a matter of course and think nothing of it, as if it were acceptable behaviour. They don't even bother to deny it anymore, they just don't admit to it, even though everyone knows the truth. Their attitude is 'And what are you going to do about it?' as they go one more step toward criminalising peaceful protest. I detest the lot of them. It is your money they are using too.

  3. A fine post - heartfelt and true. Not much more to be said, except that despite the sad state of government affairs it referes to I enjoyed it and genuinely smiled.

  4. I thought comparing Brexit to the invasion of Ukraine was way over the top. That mummy was as happy as her little girl!

    1. It was good to see something positive, despite the circumstances.

    2. She is now asking why it took government 6 years to free her. Good for her. Bunch of bastards.

  5. Leadership is a lost art in many camps. That said, when I watch VZ, I admire his strong leadership style. Clearly, the people of Ukraine are devoted to VZ and Ukraine. I recently heard that Russia pushed for Brexit for England. If this is the case, they must have had something to gain.

    1. Yes, Russia tried to get involved but I don't know to what degree. Dictatorship is a lot easier than leadership, so long as you are good at telling lies and have people believe them. Half the people in Russia really believe that heroic Russian soldiers are fighting dangerous neo nazis in the Ukraine.

    2. Also, you need to control the media to be an effective dictator, and you cannot be a dictator without total control.

    3. Did you see that a Russian popular news journalist was shown with a sign standing behind her saying, "Stop War." She went on to say, do not believe what you are being told. She's been fined but not arrested. I felt this was a big breakthrough.

    4. Yes. That was big news here, but I don’t think it will stop Putin.

  6. Although Boris has illusions that way, for him to think he emulates Churchill is an insult to that great war leader. Thank God Boris wasn't around for WWII, we might now be a satellite of Nazi Germany.

    1. I don't think that the political climate in Britain at that time would have supported someone like him as a leader. He is not leadership material.

    2. He most certainly isn't! Goodness know how he is still there.
