    1. What a surprise. You must have listened to about 2 seconds of it, as that is how long it took you to post your comment. Best stick to the Wanking Dead.

  2. I love the BBC, despite that it is a hotbed of Marxist revolutionaries intent on the downfall of everything we love about our beloved country.

    1. I wonder why a biography of Pepys is needed considering the wealth of personal information he left behind. Nothing was left out because he didn't intend his diary to be read by anyone. Are there any fresh insights?

    2. Avus has put me right about Clare Tomlin's biography. I might get it to read myself.

  5. Thanks for the recommendation. I've been to investigate & there's quite some terrific listening on that little channel. There's a even a bit of Winston Graham!

    1. There are too many repeats and poor quality comedy these days. They have been told to cut back again.

  7. I enjoy Pepys' diaries. I have a Folio Society 3 volume set. A man who enjoyed life to the full. It's wonderful when he takes my hand to foray through the streets of 17th century London and shares his working days with me.

I can recommend the Claire Tomalin biography. There was much more to Pepys' life than the 10-odd years of the diaries.

    1. Yes, I forget that the diaries only cover 10 years. They are a wonderful insight into 17th century life. Things were so much simpler, and there was no celebrity culture.

    2. Just appalling living conditions, poverty, early death and the odd fire, so, simple really.

    3. A bit like my living conditions then.

  8. Interesting to listen to in the early morning hours, he had a lusty young wife and a feminist to boot...

  9. Pepys' eyewitness view inside 17 century London make for interesting reading. Being his diary entries, I wonder if he would have been less explicit about his personal life had he known all was to be published. Pepys' led a colorful life.

    1. He entered the sexual encounters in his diary in cod latin, but that was not much of a disguise.

  10. I think that his whole diary is published online somewhere. I once read several weeks worth of it. The little bugger repeatedly went to his office where he didn’t find much to do, then went out to eat, then went home to argue with his wife. This scenario repeated itself a lot. Although I did not read the whole thing, I am so very happy that such a document survived. How cool is that!

    1. I like the little details such as him burying his large Parmesan cheese to save it from the Great Fire.
