The Pig

I am planning a leisurely day making about one square foot of mortar repairs to an ordinary terraced house at the Northern end of the town.

About half of the 3/4 mile walk to get there is up a very steep hill and the last 40 feet is up a very steep ladder. Then I can relax.

I can relax for a further two days as I prepare the workshop for the making of the Portland stone fire-surround and then begin. She has been waiting for almost 9 years for it, so I have been a little too relaxed about it in the past.

In the last two days of this week I will be driving to Wells, Somerset, to do another little relaxing job. It is 30 miles to Wells from here, so I will have to leave fairly early (for me) to get a full day in, but it is a nice drive.

My good German friend and his new girlfriend chose a holiday in England by sticking a pin in a travel guide. The pin hit Salisbury. As any Russian assassin will tell you, Salisbury Cathedral has the highest church spire in Europe at 403 feet.

In October, H.I. and I will be spending one night at The Pig at Studland Bay. This was a combined birthday present from our nearest and dearest. We have eaten there a couple of times but not stayed.

We have our own little cottage in the grounds which overlooks the purpose built bunker where the Allied Command oversaw the practice for a sea battle. They used live ammunition for this naval manoeuvre. Many lives were needlessly and inexplicably lost.

Churchill stayed at the house which became The Pig, and  - in his honour - you are allowed to sit by the large log fire and smoke cigars at the end of your meal. I might just do that.

  1. I don't know why, but I assumed you would be making the fireplace in situ.

    1. I think that would produce a bit too much dust in their flat...

    2. Might be a bit noisy for the neighbours too.

    1. There is no money in the fire surround. It's an overdue wedding present. Feel free to sympathise again, Weave.

    1. Yes, that's it. Something out of the Catskills maybe? Too small for the Overreach.

  5. The fireplace surround is a fabulous gift. 9 years in the waiting says demand is high and fitting in a project is no easy task. The Pig looks grand and wonderful. Also, a very nice B-day gift.
