Well it is two weeks now since the shortest day - yes on bright days it does seem to be staying light a little longer but not on days like the one in your photograph.
Now shush you lot....here in Melbourne on the last day of January sunset will be 15 mins earlier than it was on the first. Also sunrise will be half an hour later! The wheel is turning!
I'm kind of late to the party, but what IS that in the first picture? It looks like a castle. You've probably explained a hundred times before, but the yank has missed it.
I downloaded an old image of Eton College once, and when I went to use it for a blog post, it contained a virus which Getty Images said would destroy my computer if I tried to download one of their images again without paying. They are a nasty bunch of moral delinquents. When I saw one of my own images which they had stolen, I demanded payment, but they denied all knowledge.
Haha, my second thought (the first: "Beautiful photo!") was: "Hey, out there is another soul that wakes up at 4:30 sometimes!" - then the third: "Oh.. no...can't be: much too bright for that ... solstice or not..." (Today - Sunday! - I woke up short after five - and even now, after breakfast, at 7 a.m. it is pitch dark outside in Berlin). Yes, daylight lasts a little longer. But must become a little more to make me jubilate - but it is a step into the right direction.
Well as another ex-Bathonian, the eerie photo is of Sham Castle I think, a folly to see from Bath. I think counting the minutes of light that lengthens after Xmas is an optimistic note. The darkness is slowly being swept aside as the New Year begins.
There's February as well. I wish - along with several billion others - I could shake this feeling of dread and negativity. The finer weather will help, once it arrives.
Fog does evoke a certain mood. I like your shot. We've had a few foggy days around these parts of late. The fog becomes so so thick, that it's hard to see the stop lights.
Yes, the days are lengthening a little. It is good.
ReplyDeleteApproximately 3 minutes a day. It soon mounts up.
DeleteI thought the same thing myself the other day. It cheered me up a bit (but that didn't last long).
ReplyDeleteThis winter is a real endurance test.
DeleteYep you are absolutely right.
ReplyDeleteNice view. 17.10 it got dark here.
After almost 70 years, I shouldn't be surprised I suppose.
DeleteBTW, the castle has a backdrop of fog, which is a rarity and why I took the picture. There is a hill behind it.
DeleteExplain, explain. Is it Sham Castle? Why did I not see it when I was there?
DeleteYes it is, but it is easy to miss. I used a zoom lens.
DeleteBath and Alkmaar are twin sister cities. We have the Bath bridge here in Alkmaar. That part of England is very nice indeed.
DeleteYes, my friend was one of the emissaries. I don't know how Brexit has affected our twinning.
DeleteYes they're getting longer. They're still b***** miserable, though. :)
ReplyDeleteThey're worse than that, they are f****** miserable.
DeleteGetting longer. Still light at 3.30.
ReplyDeleteNever fails to give hope, no matter how far north you are.
DeleteStill dark at 9am for friends of ours in Shetland...
ReplyDeleteYou will really notice it after Imbolc/Candlemas/early February...
See above.

ReplyDeleteIt was a foggy day here Weave.
DeleteEthereal
ReplyDeleteARE YOU CALLING ME ETHEREAL???
DeleteIsn't it nice! Excess daylight.
ReplyDeleteI would say excess darkness.

ReplyDeleteYour turn.

ReplyDeleteIt's a fake castle, built to enhance the view of the man who sold Bath stone in the 18th century.
DeleteThat is amazing.
DeleteThat man also invented the postal service. Ralph Allen was his name.
DeleteThere is a similar one overlooking the town of Matlock in Derbyshire, built by John Smedley.
DeleteOh aye?
DeleteIt loos like the cover of a Phil Rickman novel!
ReplyDeleteYes, I should sell it before Getty Images steal it. They have already stolen one of mine without payment.
DeleteReally? You should try using one of theirs....a friend of mine used one on his blog and they threatened to sue him big style.

There will come a time when it gets light at about 3.

ReplyDeleteNo prize this time.
DeleteThe days are getting longer but sunrise is still close to the same time. I wish there were a book where all these things are explained.
ReplyDeleteIt's normally explained using salt and pepper pots.
DeleteIt's lightening by the day Tom. But we won't be really noticing it until February.
ReplyDeleteHow I long for the feel of a warm sun on my back
I noticed it yesterday.
DeleteThere is a quickening this time of year. We've just noticed them shortening here post solstice. Last couple of days.
ReplyDeleteChristmas on the beach for you. Mine was in the park.
DeleteUsually January is do-able because you know that Spring will happen eventually but somehow I'm less convinced this year.
ReplyDeleteThere's February as well. I wish - along with several billion others - I could shake this feeling of dread and negativity. The finer weather will help, once it arrives.
DeleteI've added a link which you might like. It reminds me of my Art School days, Cro and everyone.

I have heard about your fogs.
