Green-Eyes has known this random collection of small things - which began to accumulate years before she was born - forever, but it wasn't until she reached adulthood before she asked herself the question that only a child would ask, having rejected the answer that only an adult would give.
"It's dust you collect really, isn't it?"
I~SAY~NOTHING...

I'm saying nothing either.
DeleteNowt wrong with collecting dust. If dust didn't collect we wouldn't be here.
ReplyDeleteNeither would Joni Mitchell.
DeleteWhat a beautiful collection. I like it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I die you can have it, my dear.
DeleteYou need a cabinet of curiosities, preferably glassed in!
ReplyDeleteSo they can't get out?
DeleteA couple of bits look like wood shavings.
ReplyDeleteBirch bark. A good source of aspirin if you run out.
DeleteDo you know the quote from Quentin Crisp? “There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse.”
ReplyDeleteYes. I know from experience that it's not true.
DeleteI once had that revelation too, but still keep some mementos that trigger happy memories.
ReplyDeleteTrigger-happy memories creep up and shoot you in the back of the head.
DeleteBeautiful objects, precious memories...but yes, dust gatherers!
ReplyDeleteWe have servants who also polish the silver.
DeleteShe was spot on 🤣😂..... we have loads of dust ! XXxX
ReplyDeleteI store most of mine safely under the bed.
DeleteThe Miss Havisham-look gets plenty of traction around here, too. Nothing a good bath from time to time can't fix.
ReplyDeleteLike your avatar?
DeleteThat looks like half the top of Laura's dresser, sans turtle.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people seem to collect dust.
DeleteHow your picture brought back an immediate memory of a blog post I wrote in 2015, Tom. It is here:

I enjoyed reading that, Avus. Our collection include things picked up on holidays. Buried in amongst that lot somewhere is a .303 British bullet case dated 1943, found in the Samarian Gorge, Crete. I am amazed you can remember old posts with such clarity. I can hardly remember what I wrote last week.
DeleteOut of the mouths.......
ReplyDeleteYes. No respect whatsoever.
DeleteSigh. Don't all collections collect dust?
ReplyDeleteI miss the layers of dust in the old British museums. These days, everything is sanitised.
DeleteNo dust, no collections. I'll keep my collections...and dust.
ReplyDeleteOurs gets emptied out and cleaned about once every 20 years.
DeleteBeing a 'good' lapsed Catholic..
ReplyDeleteCan l leave a religious quote...
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust...
A phrase from the burial service in the Book
of Common Prayer.."We therefore commit this
body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to
ashes, dust to dust..in sure and certain hope
of the Resurrection to eternal life"...Amen!
Goodness! What a memory..And, l haven't been to
a funeral in years..!
You should always go to other peoples funeral...
otherwise they won't go to yours..! ;).
I find dust like this fascinating. When we used to go to estate sales this was the sort of thing I drug home and usually the estate people are glad to let it go.
ReplyDeleteMe too. It contains unknown history.
