Garden sofa

Today is my first proper day back at work since lockdown. I have been waiting for the stone since then. Stonemasons can be very trying.

I am making two sections of the seat for a stone bench like the above. The one above was made entirely by me (about 25 years ago) except for the two arms. There were so many of these benches made (in the 19th century) that I could look up photos of the design to work from. Once together it could be coloured to look as old as the original arms.

It's not very comfortable.

    1. I have actually made stone cushions in the past.

  2. That applies to a lot of furniture these days too Tom. Rather fancy it in my own garden - probably costs the earth.

  3. It looks lovely, I would be more than happy to have one, but half the size.

    1. That's an armchair. They did make them I think.

  4. I love it! I agree that it probably isn't terribly comfortable, but I still think it would be a great piece tucked away by a perennial bed. -Jenn

    1. It is currently tucked away in the middle of a huge rose garden, with perennial beds, so not far out.

  5. Lovely, but a bit cold?
I need lots of cushions, being slim and easily feel cold - so to the very surprise of our Italian restaurant, a posh one, I brought my own (beautiful) blanket for sitting on their terrace after 17 o'clock.
The Italian waiters smiled and said "brava", so you see: I don't care too much what other people might think about me, different from what you suspected in one comment. In normal life I do speak my mind - In bogland I try not to hurt - and in political questions I more than once I got some heavy thrashing, so I think: Let it be - I am German, thus the cards are stacked against me, whatever I say.
I enjoy blogging, so I decided it should stay a joy.
Blanket: In Corona-times restaurants are not allowed to give guests blankets. So: I help myself! :-)

  6. It must feel good to be back at work. First rate. That stone sofa is there in a stone mason's yard. Is that where it was when you encountered it twenty five years ago?

    1. That was where my workshop was. I shared with a marble mason. The arms were brought to me by a dealer and I made the rest.

  8. Did we not get told by our elders that sitting on a cold stony seat gives you piles? Mind you, I think that was at the same time they were promoting Father Christmas.
