Shop 'till you drop

I think we have all had enough of Donald Trump now. His latest irrational act is (as I am sure you have heard) was to cut off U.S. funding for the World Health Organisation. Since he has been in office, he has unilaterally made many decisions which directly and detrimentally affect the lives of everyone both inside and outside America, but now that the world needs international cooperation, even - or especially - with China, he is potentially setting the end of the crisis back by years.

In this dream-like world which we all inhabit now, I have noticed that people who entered the lock- down in a less than stable mental state are beginning to show signs of extreme stress. I don't think Trump is stressed though. He is just showing himself for what he really is - a tin-pot dictator with an IQ of about 3. If ever there was a President who would be willing to launch an all-out nuclear war, it is him. It is time he was removed from office on the grounds of mental illness. He is, quite literally, unfit.

For the last week or so, people have been dotted about on street corners, silently watching the slow-moving and spaced-out queue  as it heads toward the supermarket. They give a  very Georgio de Chirico look to the area, so I went from feeling that I was not just in a film, I was in a painting too. I wondered what these people were doing, but eventually realised that they are just waiting for their partners to come out of the shop. The supermarket has a policy of only allowing one person in at a time.

Yesterday, ahead of me in the queue was a Chinese man in a beige outfit with matching baseball cap and thick spectacles. He looked like a miniature version of Jacques Tati in a face mask.

He had a shopping bag on wheels which he used to keep his place as he frequently stepped out of line to check the length of the queue, which was growing longer by the minute. Us under 70s (I was asked my age but decided not to abuse the system by going to the front) were waiting for the elderly and vulnerable to finish shopping before being allowed in to do our own.

After the fifth check on the length of our queue, the Chinese man could stand it no longer. He went up to a security guard and pointed out how many people were waiting. 'Yes, we know', was the inevitable response. He did this three times, each time becoming a little more agitated.

Eventually he was at the front of the queue and could go in to shop. Instead he stopped at the door and began shouting at the guard.

"The queue is very long!" (Arm gestures)

"Yes, it is isn't it."

"It goes down the street!" (More arm gestures.)

"I know. I don't care". (Guard becomes impatient. We are being held up behind him).

"Why don't you care?!"

"Listen, go in and do your shopping".

I see this sort of thing every time I leave the house now.

  1. The man in charge of the WHO is guilty of crimes against humanity being a former member of the Revolutionary terrorist organisation in Ethiopia who overthrew the Ethiopian government in the 90s, his name escapes me at the moment and I can't be bothered to look it up, and they did a fair bit of ethnic cleansing in Ethiopia and it is still going on, same group. He has no medical qualifications whatsoever. I wouldn't give him any money either.

    1. Tedros is his name. Most of the world is largely ignoring the WHO.

    2. I thought you might support Trump again. Anything which needs reform should be scrapped completely seems to be your attitude to everything if it involves spending a bit of money.

    3. Look at what the world thinks about the WHO. If you don't want to know then carry on. This is about the WHO not Trump.

    4. In 1986, Tedros received a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Biology from the University of Asmara. In 1992, Tedros received a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Immunology of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine at the University of London. In 2000, he earned a PhD in community health from the University of Nottingham for research investigating the effects of dams on the transmission of malaria in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
      Is this not true then?

    5. I don't know what his PhD is in, nor any of these qualifications you have copied out, but he is amongst other things guilty of covering up Cholera outbreaks in Ethiopia; his position in the WHO was sponsored by the Chinese Govt; he is guilty of war crimes in Ethiopia whilst Foreign Minister; WHO employees in Yemen took, as in stole, WHO funds under his watch and are still employed in the WHO. It is a corrupt organisation and needs looking into seriously is my point.

    6. Your 'point' points away from the main point in this post, which is that Trump is a dangerous megalomaniac who is putting - amongst other continents - Africa in extreme danger by pulling the plug on funding for WHO at precisely the point when global cooperation is needed when it comes to funding for fighting Covid 19.

What is the matter with you that you feel the need to defend this scumbag at every turn? Are you in love with him or are you (as I suspect) beginning to show the symptoms of stress that I specifically refer to above? Some of your recent foaming at the mouth posts suggest to me that you are.

    7. I wasn't specifically thinking of Trump I was thinking about the state of the WHO and it may just be that Trump isn't actually wrong on withdrawing money. I don't specifically wish to defend him but I like to look at things from all sides. I am not suffering from stress and nor I am I writing foaming at the mouth. You just don't seem to be able to read carefully enough to understand what I am talking about. My recent posts have been nothing about not wanting to give money for instance but rather trying to examine why certain establishments are in the state they are in before chucking more money at them.

    8. I am going to tell you now that I am going to take the gloves off when dealing with you in the future. I am going to get personal and you will get upset about it, as usual. If you don't want to hear what I really think about your ever changing attitude to the present crisis, don't look. I read very carefully, you just don't see anything from anyone else's point of view. You insult everyone's intelligence with your fatuous comments about queues in supermarkets and how you should arrive later if you are not in the vulnerable category.

Your schoolgirl gushing over Rishi Sunak was embarrassing, as was your plea to Boris Johnson to rise from his deathbed and save the country like King Arthur.

There are people in this world who are suffering much more than you ever will, and it is about time you acquired a modicum of humility and acknowledged it.

    11. I cannot be bothered with you anymore. It's a good job that the veg artist can be arsed to counteract the bollocks that you come out with to defend your extreme right-wing heroes. You dismissed him as merely 'copying' the facts about the WHO's director's medical qualifications, and left it at that. You may not have been talking about Trump, but I was. Grow up and stop hero-worshipping unworthy politicians.

  2. Agreed. I'm happily not the designated shopper in our house. But also we can get by with deliveries, which are many and varied should one wish to take advantage - coffee, fruit and veges, baked goods, meat - not much call to go out at all if one has enough soap, toothpaste, loo rolls and cleaning things. I'm quite enjoying supporting the smaller businesses.
    And Anything beats queuing!

  3. I loved the US Governor on TV yesterday - he said: "Trump is not our King, he is the President, and as governors of our state we do as we think right."
Tom, I always wonder about seemingly sane people as the woman doctor who always stands behind him - and look at her face - why do they say nothing? They will not be put into prison (as in some other states) - so why being utterly still??

    1. I haven't watched Trump give briefings. You don't hear much from the First Lady either.

    2. Do yourself a big favour and don't watch! They go on for hours & hours and are a total farce! He cannot string two coherent sentences together, denigrates any reporter who asks a perfectly legitimate question and lies continually. I particularly enjoy the segment CNN runs afterwards where they have a specific person who then goes through and counts, then corrects all the lies.

  4. Luckily I have a son who sits up until midnight and gets me a slot in Tesco delivery once a fortnight - a kind neighbour shops for fruit and fresh for me and that's enough.

  5. I have not experienced anything like you describe about shopping here. The queues are short, or non existent. If the shop is like your corner shop why don't you time it so as to not have to arrive at the point when everyone is waiting for the elderly to leave?

  6. After a long afternoon on the computer, my daughter managed to get me a place on the supermarket fortnightly delivery list and a tiny teenage girl's just hauled the crate up in the lift. So I'm delighted to have cheese and milk, bread and apples again.
But you know that feeling when you get back from the shops that there's something you've forgotten...

  7. Trumps words about WHO, are the same words that could be used describe Trump. He blames everyone, but praises himself. He had time, but did little to prepare for the virus because he didn’t want anything to disturb the stock market or his re-election. He is inept and horrid. His daily briefings are repulsive.

What was surprising are the pictures of republican marches in Michigan I think...thousands... against the present limitations.. and many armed
