It was a dark and stormy night...

...when Mary Shelley climbed these stairs in Bath to write a couple of chapters of Frankenstein by candlelight.

Actually it was. The weather was so bad that she decided to stay here rather than walk back to the house near the abbey where she was supposed to be lodging.

Look at those stairs. They are made from solid stone, cantilevered into the walls. They built the stairs as they built the house. Delicate, elegant and extremely heavy.  It doesn't look possible that they should hold themselves up.

  2. Your title brought back such memories of my father for me Tom. He used to say the following rhyme:

It was a dark and stormy night.
The brigands and the chiefs were assembled in the caves together.
And the chief said unto Antonio -
    Tell us a story
    And it started like this:
It was a dark and stormy night .....and so on
