Any ideas?

You know how I like mystery objects. I found this - badly framed - in a charity shop. It looks to be quite old and is written on light, handmade paper which has been folded 9 times to form a little packet one and a half inches square.

I cannot identify the language - maybe Nepalese? What makes me curious is why someone would bother to frame it - maybe it is personal or maybe it is historical on some level.

Any Any ideas?

  1. Maybe it was folded and placed in the Wailing Wall or equivalent ..... or a note left for a lover and then framed because it says lovely things !!!! I don’t know .... I like it though. I’d have it on one of my walls. XXXX

  3. It's upside down. I think you may have discovered the third letter of Fatima.

    1. Are you absolutely sure it is upside down? That implies that you recognise the script.

    2. My first thought was that it is upside down.

    3. In this type of Asian script the long bars always seem to go on the top but I know what you mean.

    1. Do you really know that Yael or is it a feeling?

  6. I turned it twice to the right and the first line is a mathematical equation and so the rest is an written explanation of that!

    1. I believe that what you are talking about is a date. The plus (+) sign is a numeral in several different scripts.

  7. I flipped it to right side up. However, I believe it is still upside down; it has been scanned from the wrong side. Tricky things happen when you scan.

    1. I deliberately scanned it that way, but I know I can always flip it during the edit. I could have put it on its side.

    1. At last, a genuinely authoritative response. That would have been my initial response too, Weave. I have jumped to most of the conclusions above and I have sent a scan to people who ought to know something about it.

    1. I'm struggling with this but so far I have a 90% chance of the words taxi and cat coming up in Hindi. Thanks. I will persevere.

  11. From a more thorough examination , it seems to me that this is not up side down and that this is a Hindi script.I might be wrong.

    1. could it be a marriage contract? like the dowry payment? I agree it looks like it could be hindi or Bengali? I cant think what else could be framed. ha ha it could be the health and safety cert from a restaurant! I like that idea.

  12. After what Yael, said I wonder if it is Sanskrit, a prayer or something. It doesn't look the wrong way up in Sanskrit.

  16. It is Hindi, it is not upside down. From the picture posted it is not really legible though there are some dates in there.
