Amazingly inexpensive

This post is just a celebration of finally retrieving several thousand photos which were locked away in an old library from my previous OS. I just worked out how to get them back after a couple of years of half-hearted attempts.

That is my mother up there. She was a fashion model before the war and the advent of my sister put a stop to her career. She was due to model in Norway just as WW2 was declared. In those days, models were called 'mannequins'. There were no super models, only film stars.

  1. The costume was so smart and the thing to wear and always my mother's favourite to go out in.

    1. Twin set. Onesies were overalls.

    2. I still wear twin sets but like to think they have a modern flair!

  2. A time of elegance. People made an effort and cared about how they looked when they went out in public. Did your mother do quite a bit of modelling before she had children? -Jenn

    1. I'm not sure how much she modelled. Every man wore a hat- except my father.

  5. She looks wonderful and the costume is very beautiful too. There are not many people who look like this today, it's a pity.

  6. Your mother looks extremely elegant, smart, and very attractive - "amazingly inexpensive" - it would be interesting to know just how inexpensive it was! as it certainly doesn't look cheap.

  7. You do look like your mum. She had such poise.
There are various photographs of London, New York and football grounds iaken in the 1920’s where every single man is wearing a hat. I don’t think it was better, just different. XXXX

  9. My mother did hand modeling. There was so much local print advertising in those days.

    1. I have know a few hand models - male and female. I knew a leg model once too. Sarah Codrington, who had amazing legs and an utterly bonkers everything else.

  10. Good for your perseverance. And I think the detail on the pocket is outstanding. Now I'm thinking of all the sewing on that garment. Everything is what I call tedious and fussy, and must be done well or the whole look is ruined. I wonder who did Jersey Club's sewing.

    1. I don't remember my mother's tits being so out of level but maybe I was too close to focus.

    2. Actually, she's standing with one shoulder higher than the other. And you're a sculptor!

  12. What a treasure trove to be going through! Your mum looks great in the shot, wonky bust and all.

I saw a 1920s police Wanted blurb in an mugshot exhibition that described the felon as "last seen without a hat".
