Most of the time, I enjoy my semi-indolent lifestyle, especially when the weather is good.
I get up when I want to, sit around for indecently long periods drinking tea (used to be coffee - I still haven't worked that out), take a leisurely 25 minute drive into the countryside, then spend a few hours working on really beautiful objects before driving back and going into the pub for a beer and a chat.
I take each day as it comes. I have to. I never made any sensible plans when I was younger, and my brother stole our inheritance.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.
Do you live by the Micawber principle?
ReplyDeleteNo. I'm just glad there are no debtor's prisons any more.
DeleteSounds like a good life to me.
ReplyDeleteWhen is your birthday? I know it's coming up.
Today.
DeleteThe descrption of your day (when it is sunny) reminds me of of the artist in our house. He is definitely not rich, and over fifty now (his body works still absolutely perfect on a high rope), and he is very much able to enjoy what he has. Of course, and that is the other side, there will be thoughts about the future; I see that with friends who had very good times as businessmen, and laughed at the peanuts we other academics earned in our jobs - now it is more difficult. They still have to work, which I think is OK if there is not such bodily hard work in it as you sometimes have to do before you can start to create out of a big chunk of marble.
ReplyDeleteI admire you, Tom. Honestly, as you know.
My work is much lighter than it used to be! I get young men to do the heavy stuff now.
DeleteSounds like the perfect life to me!
ReplyDeleteYours sounds pretty good to me.
DeleteWhat more could you want or need Tom ...... just embrace it. XXXX
ReplyDeleteWe watched Abigail's Party last night. Thank you!
DeleteWe were out yesterday and didn’t get back until 1.00am so only saw you’re email then. I haven’t replied because you couldn’t receive BT emails before .... is that still the case ?
DeleteHappy, happy birthday !!!!
I think that BT problem has been resolved. Maybe try replying to test it? What were you doing until 1.00am?!
DeleteWhoa -- I can't let the stolen inheritance pass without comment. Now there's a story. Was it Dickensian?
ReplyDeleteYour life sounds idyllic. I especially am taken with your satisfaction on your work as creating a thing of beauty; Ego creo pulchritudo as they say. Can I steal that for my coat of arms?
It isn't idyllic, just tolerable most of the time. The story of our blown inheritance is to sordid to be Dickensian. I'll have to translate your motto.
DeleteSounds like a nice life to me too. As these days speed by, I am focusing more on the little things - the mundane even. John McCain, a true American hero, is at the end of his life and says that this life and world is beautiful; that he is really going to miss it. We need to embrace the days. I'm going to try.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes think that I will miss people and the Summer countryside when I am gone, but always feel silly when I do. I won't be around to miss anything.
DeleteDitto. Except my motto is "Nothing to do and all day to do it."
ReplyDeleteBusy doing nothing?
DeleteYour life is an interesting one! Gabs
ReplyDeleteI hope it doesn't get too interesting.
DeleteNot a bad way to be Tom.
ReplyDeleteIt could be worse Weave.
DeleteI read this somewhere "happiness is wanting what you've got".
ReplyDeleteGreetings Maria x
Is wanting more of it unhappiness?
DeleteFor the last year we've been planning a family cemetery on our land for similar reasons. We have little, we have no plans to give what little we have to a funeral home director and life is so flippin' short. Take the long teas and enjoy the country drives.
ReplyDeleteA man here recently applied to have his body fed to his dog, but they refused.
