Captain Hook and the books
Since Monday, hundreds of excited school children have been trouping up and down the street and generally making themselves agreeably noticeable - especially in the Hi-Viz jackets.
Last night, I asked my friend's daughter if she knew why all the schools were out and about right now, and she reminded me that it is the Bath Children's Literature Festival all week.
Loads of authors and illustrators have come to give talks and readings - I think that Philip Pullman is here amongst them. Virtual royalty.
The closest thing to that I had as a child was one teacher reading the first chapter of 'The Lost World' by Conan-Doyle, then saying that if we wanted to know what happens next we had better buy the book and read it ourselves. I think I was the only one who did.
As I was taking this picture, I noticed the disabled pirate getting out of his car in the foreground. I wonders if he speaks in the present tense?

ReplyDeleteA link for your hat research Tom.
Greetings Maria x
I like your heading!
DeleteItalian children, and adults, don't read enough. Their excuse is, books are too expensive.

That is a great link, Maria. Thank you. I am going to look closer tonight. It looks promising. Italians and Americans make good hats!
DeleteAre you feeling any better today?
I hope you find your hat. Yesterday and today, so far, have been good. Thank you. X
DeleteI would have really liked a literary fest as a kid. We didn't have anything like that. We went to the library every week and I still do.
ReplyDeleteWe are destroying our libraries right now.
DeleteHow different the wafting sound of children's excited voices from tourists. Surprised you haven't found a high-viz and become an honorary chaperone to listen to Philip Pullman.
ReplyDeleteI have Hi Viz and I have insurance, but I am not cleared for working amongst children.
DeleteI do love elf-n-safety. If someone had told me to wear some yellow and orange plastic jacket when I was at school, I would have told them to eff off.
ReplyDeleteDid you fancy the lollipop lady?
DeleteI take it from this that you are a Conan Doyle fan Tom? My son is and he insisted I read his complete works - they are a bit 'all the same' for my taste.
ReplyDeleteSo long as Sherlock stays the same, that is all I am interested in.
DeleteIt seems Bath is just one festival after another these days.
ReplyDeleteYes, it seems that way to me too.
