Bambi survived Vietnam

My days for this week are - hopefully - all set out. I take H.I. and the young model to the Summer School then go to the workshop to make and re-make the pheasant until it looks as much like a pheasant as a pheasant does, but more so. No Disney will be tolerated. Humour and pathos without anthropomorphism.

The voice of Bambi has just died, aged 80-something. He was 5 years old when he made the recordings.

He went on to be a US Army officer who was decorated for valour in the Vietnam War. Apparently he never mentioned Bambi all that time save once, when he used Bambi's line to his mother when she was shot by the hunter ('Get up...etc') to a fellow soldier who had been shot in Vietnam.

I was in a restaurant in Bavaria once reading the menu to decide on dinner. The place was all wood and stuffed boar's heads, and the waitresses were in traditional local outfits, including white cotton bonnets and puff-sleeves.

I could understand everything on the German menu except one item, and I asked the waitress if she could give me an English translation.

She thought for a while then said, "I am sorry. The only word I know to tell you is 'Bambi'. It is Bambi."

So that's what happened to his mother's body.

Beste Mahlzeit meines Lebens. Zum Nachtisch hatte ich ein junges MÃĪdchen am Spieß. Das war eine gemeinsame Mahlzeit.

  9. Watership Down is a lovely book, but it hasn't stopped me from longing for rabbit!! I can' watch Bambi without crying exactly at that comment!!!
I haven't been here for quite a while, what is Summerschool?? And how delighted I am to here that you don't tolerate any Disney characters. It would be ever so nice to see the results. Trump is a menace, quite frankly! How easy to just sit there and click away some random threats not even thinking about the people that actually have to take the consequenses if the fat boy blows up the world.

    1. Summer School is H.I.'s annual private art classes. Trump is worse than a menace, he is a stupid menace.

  10. Something we should have brought with us,” Bambi said. ... Bambi stopped and put out his hand. ... I heard he survived a tour of duty in Vietnam,” Bambi said.
