Six dwarves and Brian

I see some of you couldn't wait until the 25th to cut the cake. Today I will decorate ours. It will be - as all the others done since the children really were children - be rat-themed. Don't ask, it's a long story told and illustrated years ago, but 24 years constitutes age-old tradition in this house.

They're changing the way they change the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Christopher Robin and Alice will have to go there on foot for the time being, and not cadge a lift in a lorry from Sussex as normal.

I read the autobiography of the real Christopher Robin last year (reviewed) and he struck me as a sad character whose childhood was stolen by his fictional self and the bear, who forever wanders some quite wood in Sussex...

Then Disney came along and stole everyone else's childhood (also reviewed). Now that is what I call plain greedy.

One of the Gringold Bank gnomes was on the radio this morning. He is currently playing 'Grumpy' in a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Disney does not allow the names of their dwarves to be used in any other production but their own, so in this version he is called by his real name - Brian.

  1. I would lie if I pretended that I understood everything here - but I followed you thought about the stolen childhood of Christopher Robin. Did he say so? Was his father eagerly awaiting everything he said to take it down as fiction - but not really interested in his son?

    1. After the Berlin Christmas market, they are closing the roads around Buckingham Palace when they change the guard for fear of lorries.

His father was not as attentive as a father can be, and journalists used to go to the house to see C.R., often disappointed in the real boy. When he became an adult, everyone wanted to just hear about his childhood. His toy bear became more famous than he was, though.

    2. The story about Brian the dwarf is a real one.

  2. I made a Whisky Dundee Cake - first time ever and never tasted one before - to take to the family Christmas lunch, replacing our traditional Pandoro; I'm breaking a tradition.

    3. Don't tell a Scotsman you did that. Oh and btw, I meant do you have Irish heritage, not the whisky.

    1. Anyway, you have a crib. Not everyone over the age of 6 can say that.

  4. I heard the radio too. They were Goblins at Gringotts, not Gnomes....

    1. Were they? He didn't seem to know, which is a bit strange considering he played one in the film. I always thought the joke was about gnomes, as in the gnomes of Zurich.

  8. There goes my glimmering Disneyworld!! Brian?? What are the names of the other dwarfs? Hector, Curt, Wilbur, Jason, Hubert and Clarence?
I believe it can be quite difficult to be the child of any celebrity, it's hard enough to be the child of the village priest, I think my children would agree. Sad though, that Christopher Robin actually is a sad and unseen little boy.
This cake-tradition, I saw Weavers cake, there was no icing on that, it was beautifully decorated . We have no tradition of that kind, here its the gingerbread in billions of shapes that is spreading out all over social media these days. Not to mention gingerbreadhouses, there are competitions every year, houses, churches, castles, factories, cars, bridges, windmills, you name it!
Go easy on the cake, friends, there are several days ahead!
