12th Night

Ever wondered why everyone gets to wear a crown from a cracker at Christmas? It is because the 12th Night was the time when the servants sat down and were served by their masters and mistresses in a congenial spirit of benign chaos, when all household rules were abandoned for a few hours before normality was resumed next day - the medieval equivalent of sitting on the photocopier. Cromwell didn't like it, but Corbyn might.

Obama became tearful today when he announced that he is going to use all his powers to legislate against un-legislated gun laws in the U.S. Wish him luck, never mind me.

Thing thing is, who actually NEEDS assault-rifles like Kalashnikovs who are not military?

Do you REALLY think that you have a right to own a sniper rifle which can kill someone from 2 miles away? Do you need to kill someone who is 2 miles away?

Shotguns are sporting equipment, but does any civilian actually need a semi-automatic, 9mm hand-gun?

Give the man a chance. He was in tears tonight and needs your support.

  1. Obama does need our support, and he's being very brave to take on the gun lobby. The NRA has a stranglehold on our politicians and I can assure you that there are a whole lot of perfectly normal looking people here who believe it's their God-given right to own any kind of weapon they want. I personally know at least a dozen (maybe more) people who own assault rifles. It's frightening.

  2. I admire Obama greatly for his anti gun laws because all of these massacres in the USA show the country up in a bad light.

  3. As a Canadian, I just can't comprehend that you could be anywhere in the U. S. and someone might be armed right next to you. However, we are noticing more gun violence in our bigger cities recently and it is very disturbing. I hope Obama can make a difference, but I am a bit doubtful. (I've been lurking around your blog for a while now, enjoy it very much!) -Jenn

  4. I am very thankful that Australia has the gun laws that we do. Obama needs all the support he can get with his gun laws. I just don't think people need to own a gun unless perhaps you are a farmer.

    1. There's nothing wrong with shooting as a sport, unless you want to shoot people. British gun owners are highly regulated.

  5. Trump has vowed to overturn any stupid Obama change in the laws (when he becomes Prez), thank goodness they have a more realistic man in the wings (puke).

  6. How I wish that President Obama could open that locked door he is pushing at...I suspect he won't be able to but God Bless the man for trying.

  7. Good that Mr. Obama tries. I am a bit pessimistic (remembering how Mrs. Obama had to make a drawback after campaigning for health and against sugar - the industry was stronger). But then: it is a good intention, and sometimes wonder happen.

  8. I was once on a holiday in the US when one of our party stopped off to look round a gun shop. When he joined us again he was shocked and appalled by the fact that just about every kind of gun was available.
I don't hold out any hope of Obama getting the support he needs, but at least he is trying and it is obviously a subject close to his heart. Well and truly a great man.

  10. Nearer home we need to look at the selling of knives on line. Murder weapons on sale on line through Amazon to anyone and used in gangland fights to the death. Zombie killer knives for one purpose only. To kill. The majority of gang members and the victims are between 17 and 21.

    1. Kitchen knives are more useful for killing people than other ones.

    2. Yesterday I was sorting out a large pile of vicious looking old kitchen knives for chucking. Not quite sure what to do with them!
