Film review
Everyone has been telling me to watch 'Gladiator' for the last 12 years or so, so tonight I finally got round to watching it, having just got back from Rome.
I have hardly ever seen such a pile of stinking shite in my life, and although it has not changed my opinion of Russel bloody Crowe in the slightest, it has put me right off Ridley Scott, which is the only sad thing about it.
I am also rather worried about all my friends who told me it is a good film. I can never trust their opinion ever again.
What a waste of money that picture was. I paid £1.99 on eBay for it including postage, and I bitterly resent even that.

It was pretty bad, as I recall. As was Russell Crowe. I liked Joaquin Phoenix, though.
ReplyDeleteWas he the scarred one?
DeleteRidley made the film I was in called 'The Duallists'; he is a normally a discerning chooser of actors, maybe with Crowe he was having an off day.
ReplyDeleteI loved that movie, Cro. I didn't know you were in it!
DeleteI was a fabulously costumed officer!
DeleteAre you in anything else we should see, Cro?
DeleteAny 'Carry On' films?
DeleteI'm still waiting for them to start filming 'Carry on Colonel Blimp.
DeleteNo Mise, just one other called 'The Party's over'. A very short career.
Powell and Pressburger made that one in 1943.
DeleteStrictly was good last night.
ReplyDeleteSo people keep telling me, but like I say, I don't trust anyone now.
DeleteI thought it was a great film - but then I have no taste.
ReplyDeleteObviously not! I really liked Blade Runner, so this one was a disappointment. I think most directors hands are contractually tied when it comes to choosing actors. This is how Vincent Price got the job of Witch-finder General.
DeleteDo you have a favourite film? My Favourite Year with Peter O'Toole puts me in mind of you....
ReplyDeleteMy favourite film of all time is Powell and Pressburger's 'A Canterbury Tale'. I don't know how many times I have watched it, but I pretty much know the script by heart. My second best is Powell and Pressburger's 'I Know Where I'm Going' - I can recite the script for that one too.
DeleteIt wasnt a good muvie but mr crowe was very good IN IT .
ReplyDeleteIncidently , when we went to Malta ( a shite holiday) i was lucky enough to sit in the pub chair that oliver Reed was taken ill in before he died ( you may remember Gladiator was filmed in malta and Reed karked it during filming)
I expect you know I am going to disagree with you, John. He is wooden beyond credibility in that film. It was him above all else which made the film a complete bore, as far as I am concerned.
DeleteOliver Reed's cousin runs a framing shop here in Bath - he looks quite like him - and spent many hours in that (and other) bar, getting pissed with him. I first remember him as a handsome young werewolf in a Hammer Horror film of the 60s.
I've just noticed from the mugshot above that Crowe is a mere 5' 8" tall, including hair.
ReplyDeleteI never saw the film, but I don't watch violent films, which is why I gave this one a miss.
