Guess who for you four

Dear You,

Trembling in anticipated excitement I await febrile felicitations from those of whom I may count as amongst dear friends, but what of things unsaid, things so very much unsaid as to be never said despite the mellowing influence of saying, when no words are deemed necessary?

Again I read of similar conundrums (Shakespeare and Goethe being amongst the finest and the first), but what of the first, when the first come are not always the first served?

Finest comments are often displayed by ordinary fellows of low birth who may - or may not - have been amongst the privileged to sit at that table when the utterance of Mr Johnson was first issued, and what an utterance indeed.

Too late to recall the unmitigating cant of Julian of Norwich - though many others from that county have always know to be before him, and also too late to rely on the ever visiting soul of of the 'Stephenson Family' - if I may make so bold as to include the Royal Household and the noble house of the Magazine of 'Men's Health', with wash-board stomachs and young men on house-boats, if ever a further visit to the entire 22 lochs of Devizes were ever to be seen again by one such as I.

No, it is better that I - again - visit the honey-coloured and drenched environs of the Roman City, but this time will lodge in a much dryer Crescent hotel as my young men will allow me as they adjourn on that canal boat to await my return  in the fine morning.

  4. Dear Tom,
I first had to consult my "Debrett's New Guide to Ettiquette and Modern Manners" (putting aside for a few moments my beloved tattered 'Debrett's Etiquette for Girls', though I think it is so much more suitable, - as our dear poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: "Everyone believes in his youth that the world really began with him, and that all merely exist for his sake" - but that is another most fascinating subject I will follow till the end of time, sitting at a pond and looking deeply into it, mind: I am not speaking of Walden Pond, oh no, but - just to vex you (awaiting another chocolate cake flying through the word wide web) - of a beautiful young man who wears the name of a flower that your dear poet William Wordsworth described, though sadly not using the expression I would have preferred) to see if I am allowed to answer so soon.
My dear ancestors taught me "Never apologize, never explain" - but even blue blood can boil, dear Rachel: it must be "A Case of Mistaken Identity", I never ever deleted you - only my comment above, see? And to end with another quote by dear Johnny v.G. "Tell me with whom you associate, and I will tell you who you are." So: follow me...

    1. That was wonderful, Britta - you are truly inimitable. Yes, it was me who removed Rachel's comment, because I didn't know if you would take this in good humour, which I think you have...

    2. And all I can remember about the modern Debrett's is that it is rude to Cc someone in on an email and not put them at the top along with the other recipients. I will try to remember that.

  5. You are doing magnificent work here, Tom, and breaking new ground in Blogtopia. Plus, I am pleased to discover Britta, whose blog is new to me. She is a woman of spirit and charm, worthy indeed of Lucia.
