Baby's first pint of beer
The first pint that grand-daughter has ever professionally pulled on her first night as a new barmaid in my favourite pub - tonight - and I made absolutely sure that she poured it for me. That's her in the background.
It seems only a little while since I used to bring her in here as a 4 year-old, sitting her on my knee and taking care of her, and now - bless her - she is doing her bit to make sure that the old man wants for nothing, but this time she is getting paid for it.
You are witnessing history in the making, and the tear that springs in my eye has nothing to do with alcohol - honest. No really, honest to God (sob...).

I never worked in a pub, like your granddaughter, but I did spend tons of time in one with my grandfather when I was a kid. He'd buy me a huge coke and a cheeseburger. It's a fantastic memory. Sadly, his liver couldn't handle his choice of drink and he died way too young. I miss that old drunk!
ReplyDeleteBut I do thank you for making me remember him today.
Your Friend, m.
That's good Mark. I don't think my girl will let me drink myself to death though... maybe.
DeleteThey grow up so fast, don't they?
ReplyDeleteI know - I wish I had.
DeleteI am suprised that she is working in the pub that you drink in ...... you will have to behave yourself now.
ReplyDeleteP.S I can whistle with my fingers, but I'm not a lesbian !
What I like about her is that I can be myself - she has learnt a few lessons because of my honesty, and that is much better than preaching.
DeleteIt sounds as if you have a lovely relationship with her Tom and there can't be anything better than that. I think that she will have a lot of fun working there.
DeleteShe was worried that I would attack anyone who was rude to her!
Deletekeep the old lag barmaids away from her..... bet THEY could tell a story or to about you
ReplyDeleteIf only they could... There are some old barmaids from the 70s that could. Turns out she is working tonight with a friend (21 years old) who she already knows and loves - as I do. It's great.
DeleteTearing up on the blog. You are a softie when it comes to the kiddos I see. It is good the two of you have such a terrific relationship.
ReplyDeleteShe is the love of my life - or one of very few.
DeleteOh so cute...heaven help the scum who hit on her in your presence!
ReplyDeleteI did promise not to usurp her authority, so it would have to be a case of staring very hard until it turned into anything serious!
DeleteA good excuse to be there from opening till closing times. On bodyguard duty.
ReplyDeleteI did stay there a little longer than I normally do last night, but still left before 7.00, catching the last 3 minutes of The Archers. The best thing about last night was everyone finally realising that she has a connection to me at all - some of her magic rubbed off by association.
DeleteWell done, Tom -- I think your a very special grandfather with a very special granddaughter...
