Man cannot live by dread alone

Sorry for two posts in one day, but I wanted to get the taste of the last one out of my mouth, though I am leaving up to vitriolically hang in the air for as long as Google will have it.

Why the title?  Well, do you - like me - sometimes go through days when you misread lines in a paper or on a billboard, substituting single letters for others and making entirely different meanings, or no meaning at all?  That's what I was doing this morning, and the title was one of them.  I liked it though, so I thought I would use it, and having no immediate purpose for it, I used it anyway.  The same applies to the photo.

The most extreme example of misreading that I have experienced was also carried out by me, but - unfortunately - inconvenienced about 8 others as well.  I think I have already told you about it, but I sent a handful of my fellow students and teachers on a wild goose-chase once, by telling them I had just gone past a road sign which pointed the way to 'Runfold Palace and The Towers of Jocasta'.

This fired their curiosity up so much, that they vowed to set out by bus to the location that very afternoon, not realising that such an exotic place existed in the sleepy area of Surrey where our college was situated.

When they got there, they found a small cul-de-sac leading to three modern, little houses called 'Runfold Place', 'The Towers' and 'Jocasta'.  They did not speak to me for quite a while afterwards.

Right - points will be awarded for the best personal examples of misreading given in the comments box below.

  1. P.S. I like the way that the Nazi Girls' looks deteriorate the further down the line you go.

  5. Girl no. 4 looks slightly jealous of girl no. 3. How did that picture (solely posted for the benefit of old lusty men) end up with a blog post about misreading things?

For a long time I misread a business sign here in town. I thought that it said 'Union of painters and prettyfiers'. I thought that it sounded so quaint and that it had something to do with interior decorating. It actually said 'pipefitters'.

    1. I always misread signs saying 'Shop-fitters' as 'Shop-lifters'.

If you don't know why (aside from the benefit of lusty old men) the photo is there, then A: you're not alone; and B: you didn't read the post properly.
