A View

This must be the best view from a pub in - or just out - of Bath.  Four of us had lunch there yesterday, having heard that it had changed hands.  The view has always been good, but the food has always been terrible for about 40 years to my knowledge, but there has been change for the better.

To the lower left of centre, you can just make out the first place I lived in when I arrived to this area.  It is a large manor which was built on the foundations of a medieval convent, as mentioned in a previous post.

The far distant hills are the Marlborough Downs, about 25 miles away.  The wind that blew hard enough to bring down the Horse Chestnut tree on the right, came directly over them at about 60 MPH, and the 100-ish year old thing wasn't rooted deep enough to survive.  It's flowers and leaves are wilting, and the kids have had their last game of conkers with it's fruit.

The picture (a bad one, using a grubby phone lense) was taken during a rare break in the rain, but today it's back to normal.  I've just heard a weather forecast that predicts this cold wind and rain to last until sometime into June.

Somewhere in the middle distance lies my workshop - to which I am reluctantly going to do some work.

  1. If you're in the area, the pub is called 'The Hare and Hounds', and is at the top of Lansdown.

  2. 40 years and terrible food? They must have been doing something right. Now that the food is good, the place will probably go out of business.
    Good morning!

    1. Don't worry, Mark. When they brought my plate to me, it had a long black hair in it (thankfully a straight one - by which I mean that it was not curly - nothing to do with sexual orientation) so at least they are keeping up with some good, old, British traditions.

Things are different over here - which is why it has taken so long for our food to improve to French standards.

    2. P.S. - H.I. said that it should be called 'The HAIR and Hounds'. That's why I never sent it back.

  6. Rain and more rain here as well. I always said Chatsworth Illinois is the step-sister city to Bath.

    1. Chatsworth House is good here - it's the home of the Duke of Devonshire, but is near Sheffield - about 350 miles away from Devonshire. Britain, eh?

  7. The Marlborough downs are beautiful. What a shame the wind brought down that fantastic horse chestnut tree. 100 years gone like that, wow.

  8. My Great-Aunt Letitia, an avid reader of your blog, has told me you're on the verge of reaching the 1000th post, so I've cut short my cruise round the Caribbean to be back for the occasion. Let the party begin!

    1. I would have postponed it until your return, Mise, but since you have gone to the effort, so will I.
