Noble Rot

Right, beer. When in Germany, I often drink this stuff - a beer made from wheat rather than barley. I usually drink the filtered variety, called 'Krystal' - this is the other sort, and the cloudiness is caused by all the yeast suspended in it.

The first time I had one of these poured for me in the South, I almost screamed when I saw the barman actually turn the bottle upside down to get the last dregs of yeast out of the bottom, and my friends held me back, saying that this was normal procedure in the country and I should not look so worried.

In the days when potentially cloudy beers were sold in England, great care was taken NOT to allow any of the yeast to get into the glass, for fear of severe stomach upset which would require you to spend the following day indoors. For some reason, this beer does not have that effect.

Anyway, having taken a sip from the one photographed above last Sunday, I thought that it didn't taste quite right. Normally, any beer that didn't taste right would also look cloudy like this one, but I really don't know the criteria that is used for telling the difference between a Wiess Beer that is off, and one that is ok.

I asked to borrow some Thai Fish Sauce from a friend once, because I needed to make a curry and the shops were shut. I looked at the date on the bottle, and saw that it was about 3 years older than it's designated shelf life, and mentioned this to my friend.

She said, "Thai Fish Sauce is already rotten when it is first made. It cannot get any worse - there is nowhere left for it to go" so I took it home and used it to good effect.

I drank this beer too - it would have been a case of my word against the barman's. So far, no ill effects.

  1. P.S. - That church spire in the right corner is the one frequented by the Peregrine Falcons.

  2. I have an old sheep trough up at the allotment. Every morning a lorry rolls up to siphon it dry.

Now I know where it goes. Looks delicious though.

    1. What do you fill the sheep with during the day? (Actually, don't answer).

  3. 'White beer' is the new lager. More and more popular by the day. I've still not tried it... I will this weekend.

    1. It has a distinct taste of vanilla, and in Germany, they put a slice of lemon in it! I refuse the lemon, though, even when 'in Rome'.

  4. It has occurred to me that it looks exactly like the film version of Harry Potter's 'Butter Beer' too, but I never saw any of the wizard brats get shit-faced on it.

  5. For a moment there I was afraid you were going to throw a dash of fish sauce into your beer.

    1. They are called '100 DAY eggs', but I am told they are only about 20 days old - these days.

You wrap them in straw (I am also told) before burying. I have a friend who has eaten one (Andy, Cro) and he said it was delicious, but he (and the Chinese) would eat anything.

The only thing the Chinese hate (so I am told) is cheese - particularly the blue variety.

  7. I was thinking that I might do another 'WEIRDEST THING YOU'VE EVER EATEN' post, but I really don't think anyone could have topped me.

Mine was a necklace made from human bone, stolen from a smash-and-grab raid on a museum from a cabinet of items brought back by Sir Richard Burton. (At least, that's the weirdest thing I would admit to online - I've had worse).

Maybe I'll keep on doing 'beer' posts.
