Have a lovely Christmas

This is my Christmas card to all of you 82 loyal (but quiet) followers - plus anyone else who happens to stumble upon me.

For me (and I suspect many others of my generation!) Rupert Bear sums up a magical childhood Christmas perfectly, but there again, he also sums up the perfect summer holiday too. He is a bear for all seasons and, along with all his chums, leads a charmed, cosmopolitan but reassuringly provincial life style, somewhere in the back of our adult psyches. We have a lot to thank him for.

For an early introduction to philosophy, see Winnie the Pooh. For everything else, see Rupert.

  1. Oh and by the way, avoid all imitations (that means you, Disney!)

  4. Merry Christmas Tom.
Until you mentioned him just now, I've never heard of this bear. Apparently, I've been living under a rock for 43 years.

  8. Merry Christmas Tom! That's a lovely card--wish we had more of the original Rupert around here. I think we get a Canadian series. It's good but probably not as good as the original.

  11. I won't wish you a Merry Christmas Tom because I know it will be very, very merry indeed! (hic)

Instead I'll say Happy Christmas and thanks for all your great posts to date - they have been informative and entertaining (even when you are shouting at me). Although I don't always comment I do always read them (especially if I need to get some sleep, lol.)

All the very best mate, to you and your family. God bless.x

  13. Yes - I loved him too Tom. He was always so very well cared for by his mum - wrapped up warm in winter and yet she let him do such risky things - the kind of things we could only dream about.
My favourite was the time Mrs Bear was hanging out the washing and Rupert floated over in a hot air balloon. The caption under the picture (I loved those rhyming couplets) was
'I do declare said Mrs Bear
If that's not our Rupert flying up there.

How cool is that for a Mum?

Happy Christmas to your and your family too.

  14. Happy Christmas from the Antipodes - no Christmas was complete without a Rupert book in the "stocking". Unfortunately, I don't have any of them now. Cro must have them!!!

  15. Like Susan, I used to get a Rupert annual every year in my Christmas stocking. I used to read them with great interest even though the way of life depicted therein was completely baffling to a kid growing up in rural NZ. I loved them anyway.

Have a very happy Christmas, Tom. (Proudly one of the faithful 82)

  18. Actually, that's a bit more accurate John. Maybe Vincent Price in 'The Masque of the Red Death' - "Look at them - my friends!"

  19. Frohe Weihnachten, Tom! (And to all of you out there who quietly hover in blogspace, you better make a bit of a showing next year! Just sayin'.)
