Sorry, the layout of this fucking blog clips the right hand side, so you will have to be clever to enlarge it to full screen, but it is well worth it. Go straight to You Tube if all else fails.
Don't be put off by the scary main image - it's a mechanical clock - nothing scary at all in the video. I would not put up scary stuff on this blog! Trust me, this is a wonderful piece of engineering!
I have seen this clock many, many times, as I go into Cambridge very often. It is really beautiful and, as you say, a wonderful piece of engineering. There are always many tourists enjoying it whenever I'm there. I'm afraid that I am the owner of an enamel bread bin but, as it was a family piece, I hope that I am exonerated. .....also, what happened to the Basil Rathbone hat post ? One minute it was there and the next....GONE !!
In my nearby town of Cahors, there a wonderful clock that runs on water. But the Cambridge one gets 1st prize.
Jacqueline (above) has just reminded me that we too have a pale blue enamel bread bin. I'm now wondering if there's anything else lurking around. A tall glass jar with Spaghetti written on it maybe. No, surely not.
I have only just heard of this clock, and when I briefly lived in Cambridge, it didn't exist... or did it?
Hat post, Jackat? I think you must have dreamt it.
Breadbins - we have a breadboard with an ear of wheat carved into it, but as far as I can remember, that's our only concession to unnecessary visual clues around the house - oh wait, we have taps with 'hot' and 'cold' on them.
The Corpus Clock has only been there since 2008, when it was unveiled by Stephen Hawkins. I remember when I first saw it and was pretty impressed. Unless you lived in Cambridge in the last 3 years, you wouldn't have seen it ! ..... and, I must stop eating cheese before I go to bed ..... it obviously induces dreams of actors from the past and their choice of headgear !

ReplyDeleteTom it is fascinating.
ReplyDeleteIt's made using a lot of solid gold, and has so far cost about £1,000,000 - worth every tick, as far as I am concerned.

That is a beautiful and fascinating piece of engineering. Hypnotic. I've watched it twice now.
