2011 - Thomas does magick

There are some interesting things happening this year, the year before the world ends in 2012.

Now I am going to ask you - yes, I mean YOU (you know who you are) - to do something for me.

Take the last two digits of the year of your birth, treat them as a single number, then add them the the age you will be on your birthday THIS YEAR.

Done that?

The answer is 111.

  5. I'd love to explain how it works, MBJ, but I am verging on innumerate (and illiterate, if my spell-checker is anything to go by).

I was hoping one of you mathematical genius' would explain it.

  6. You are absolutely right and I am sure that there is a very simple mathematical reason for this, but as it is early in the morning and maths has never been my strong point then I just say - clever you.

  8. If you take the full year you were born in (as in 1985) and add your age, this takes you to the year we're in now. After all your age is exactly the amount of time that's passed since you were born. The only qualification is that if you haven't yet had your 2011 birthday, you need to add an extra 1, because your official age is still the same as it was in 2010.
The result just says that if you add your age to the year you were born (and then add 1 if you haven't had your birthday yet), you end up in the current year. Next year the magic number will be 112.
And no, I'm not a mathematical genious, I had to work it out slowly and carefully. It really is a nifty little parlour trick.
