Merry Christmas, Jim

  1. A sort of Arabic feel to it, eh? Must have been the Crusades (actually, it was...)

  2. Thanks, Tom. I have played crumhorn, rauchfeife, and baroque oboe. I love the old stuff.

  3. Baroque oboe?? I want one. I used to (badly) play all sorts of wind instruments, including the curved, hexagonal, wooden trumpet (the name of which I forget - mine was a resin copy). I handed it to Bob Mickleburgh of the Temperance Seven, and he couldn't get a note out of it - acorn cup!

I am seriously thinking of taking up oboe in my old age. Mozart's Oboe concertos are my absolute favourite. I want a bass. I met old man Dolmetsch once.

  4. I've played them. Oboe was my major in college. That was back in the day when the arts were considered important in education.

I don't play anymore, except for getting together with a couple of friends to do some recorder stuff for fun. I guess I'll never leave hockets and crab cadences.

If you want real fun...try five part medieval a capella sacred music in German. A real ride!

  5. I have a friend who is the chorister for a large church in Bremen, Germany. I'll put it to him.

  6. Swannee whistle meets Donald Duck.

  7. Yes, Cro. He is not really playing it with as much conviction as the instrument requires. Imagine trying to play a lullaby on the bagpipes.
