I know you've heard it a thousand times, but here it is again. Somehow, Benjamin B. has managed to incorporate the dread and menace of the story into the absolute 'sea-ness'. Do you remember the Dudley Moore piss-take of Peter Piers? Wonderful.
This as far as I can remember, is the first time I've heard this Benjamin Britten piece. Told you that I was musically illiterate Tom. But this piece is fantastic. I love the way the whole thing builds up to the crescendo as dawn breaks and the waves in the picture. Lovely!
You cannot divorce one from the other. This is a work of art, and - as such - you would be missing out a lot of it if you didn't read it all as a whole, Moll. It's a horrendous story, but great stuff comes out of life and death scenarios.
Ignore the inappropriate image, and the sound cuts off a bit sharpish.

ReplyDeleteIt's all about a paedophile, child-murdering and exploitative fisherman, Moll. Still interested?
